Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Sent outright to Triple-A

Braden Shipley was outrighted to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. The 26-year-old, formerly a top pitching prospect, has fallen off the map due to poor command and control (4.1 career BB/9) and an inability to keep the ball in the yard (1.7 career HR/9). Shipley's pitch repertoire is decent, but the Arizona Diamondbacks ultimately decided he wasn't worth keeping on the 40-man roster over other prospects in the organization. He figures to act as an organizational depth piece in 2019.

Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Sent back to Triple-A

Braden Shipley was optioned to Triple-A Reno prior to the Arizona Diamondbacks' 5-3 win over the Marlins on Tuesday.Shipley's latest stint in the majors lasted just two games, with the right-hander receiving the demotion after giving up four runs on four hits and two walks over two innings Monday in Arizona's loss in the series opener. The Diamondbacks had been developing Shipley as a starter since selecting him in the first round of the 2013 first-year player draft, but after finding limited success in that capacity in recent seasons, it appears he has transitioned to a full-time bullpen role.

Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Working out of bullpen at Triple-A

Shipley, Braden has made all five of his appearances with Triple-A Reno out of the bullpen since being activated from the 10-day disabled list and optioned to the minors May 18.Per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, the success Matt Koch and Clay Buchholz have enjoyed at the back end of the rotation in recent weeks coupled with the impending returns of Shelby Miller (elbow) and Robbie Ray (oblique) from the DL convinced the Arizona Diamondbacks they had sufficient organizational starting pitching depth. With that in mind, Shipley has been transitioned to a relief role, which Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen believes will increase the right-hander's chances of making an impact with the big club later this season. Before he gets another call to the majors, however, Shipley will probably have to deliver far better results out of the bullpen. In those five relief outings with Reno, Shipley has given up eight runs (seven earned) on 16 hits and five walks over eight frames.

Diamondbacks' Braden Shipley: Will pitch simulated game Friday

Shipley, Braden (elbow) is scheduled to pitch an extended spring training game Friday, Justin Toscano of MLB.com reports.Shipley came out of his bullpen session Tuesday without any issue, so he'll take another step forward in the rehab process by facing hitters in a controlled setting Friday. Assuming the extend spring training game goes well, Shipley could head out on a minor-league rehab assignment at some point next week. Once he's activated from the 10-day disabled list, Shipley could be an option for the Arizona rotation if Robbie Ray hasn't made a full recovery from a strained oblique by that point.
