Player Outlook
Mitch Garver rebounded from an injury-riddled 2022 season with a productive campaign, posting a 138 wRC+, the third highest of his career. Garver played in 87 games, the most since 2019, but he missed just over one-third of the season after hurting his knee in early April. When healthy, Garver was the everyday designated hitter, mixing in 27 games behind the plate. Garver's success in the batter's box was fully supported by his underlying metrics, which bodes well for continuing to log playing time at designated hitter. Garver has never been known for his defensive prowess, so it's not a surprise the metrics were not kind to him in his limited time defensively. Even so, Garver regained catcher eligibility and at least for the upcoming season, he's borderline useful in single-catcher formats and a solid option in two catcher leagues. He will work as Cal Raleigh's backup and the Mariners' top option at designated hitter when healthy, after signing a two-year deal with Seattle this winter.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Slugs first homer

Garver went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in a win over the Reds on Wednesday. Garver finally connected on his first round tripper of the season in the sixth inning, snapping a 1-1 tie with a 393-foot shot to left field off Andrew Abbott. The veteran's blast also served as his fourth extra-base hit overall (out of eight total hits), but he's still sporting an ugly .160/.283/.280 slash line through his first 60 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: On base twice in win

Garver went 0-for-2 with two walks in a win over the Cubs on Friday. Garver, like many of his teammates, continues to underperform offensively early in the season, but he managed to make an impact Friday with the help of some solid pitch selection and discipline. The offseason addition has only a trio of extra-base hits -- all doubles -- and a .158/.250/.237 slash line through 44 plate appearances, numbers that are partly the byproduct of his 1-for-14 showing at the plate over his last four contests.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Reaches in first two games back

Garver went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk in a loss to the Guardians on Tuesday. The noteworthy offseason acquisition laced one of four two-baggers on the night for the Mariners, with the double serving as his first hit since returning from a two-game absence due to back spasms. Garver had also reached safely in his first game back Monday, however, drawing a free pass and scoring a run over four plate appearances. The fact he was able to suit up in back-to-back games implies Garver is past his physical issues for the time being.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Back in lineup Monday

Garver (back) is starting at designated hitter and batting fifth in Monday's game against the Guardians. After starting in the season opener Thursday, Garver missed the next three games against the Red Sox due to back spasms. The 33-year old appears over the injury and will start at DH for Monday's game. With Garver returning, Mitch Haniger will move back to right field while Luke Raley returns to the bench.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Still sitting Sunday

Garver (back) is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. The 33-year-old was scratched from the lineup Friday due to back spasms and will be sidelined Sunday for the third consecutive contest. Mitch Haniger will receive a turn at designated hitter while Luke Raley starts in right field. Garver should be considered day-to-day until the team updates his status.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Remains out Saturday

Garver (back) isn't in the Mariners' lineup Saturday against Boston. Garver was scratched from the lineup ahead of Friday's contest due to back spasms, and he will seemingly require another day before he can return to the lineup. Jorge Polanco will serve as Seattle's DH while Garver recovers, allowing Dylan Moore to pick up a start at second base.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Dealing with back spasms

Garver was scratched from the Mariners' lineup before Friday's game against Boston due to back spasms, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Garver is officially listed as day-to-day, so his back shouldn't keep him out for very long. The 33-year-old veteran went 1-for-4 with a double in his Mariners debut Thursday and will operate as Seattle's primary DH this season.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Scratched from lineup

Garver was scratched from the Mariners' lineup ahead of Friday's game against the Red Sox, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. It's unclear at this stage why Garver was taken out of Friday's lineup. Mitch Haniger will serve as Seattle's DH against Boston, moving Luke Raley to right field while Dominic Canzone fills the opening in left.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Slugs first Mariners homer

Garver went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in the Mariners' Cactus League tie with the Giants on Tuesday. The offseason addition belted a Jordan Hicks offering in the first inning into the left field seats with Dylan Moore aboard to give Seattle an early 2-0 lead. The hit marked Garver's first in what was his second Cactus League game, and making it all the more impressive was it came off one of Hicks' signature triple-digit sinkers, per Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle. Garver drew the start at designated hitter, where he's expected to log nearly all his playing time in 2024.

  • Mariners' Mitch Garver: Heads to Seattle

Garver agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract with the Mariners on Sunday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. The M's now have their primary replacement for Teoscar Hernandez in Garver, who posted an .870 OPS and 19 home runs in 87 regular-season games last season (while adding three more long balls during the Rangers' World Series run). Primarily a designated hitter at this stage in his career, Garver can also chip in occasionally behind the plate. He made 28 appearances at catcher last season.

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: Active for Game 1

Garver (ribs) is batting fifth and will serve as Texas' designated hitter against Arizona in Game 1 of the World Series. Garver had to make an early exit from Game 7 of the ALCS after taking a fastball to the ribs, but he managed to escape without any serious injuries and will now return to the lineup to begin the Fall Classic. Garver has been a key piece to the Rangers' offensive success throughout the postseason, slashing .294/.368/.529 with two homers and 11 RBI.

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: No fractures after HBP

Garver (ribs) did not suffer any fractures when he was hit by a pitch Monday in Game 7 of the ALCS, Levi Weaver of The Athletic reports. Garver took a Bryan Abreu fastball to the ribs in the top of the sixth inning and was removed from the game before his next at-bat, but he has avoided a serious injury and could be ready for Game 1 of the World Series on Friday. The 32-year-old has posted an .898 OPS with two homers, two doubles and 11 RBI through nine games this postseason while serving as the Rangers' designated hitter.

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: Three hits, homer in win

Garver went 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, tallying two runs and two RBI in Sunday's 9-2 win over the Astros in Game 6 of the ALCS. Garver had a key home run in the second inning that tied the game. He later added an RBI double in the eighth. The designated hitter had been struggling to get things going at the plate against Houston in this series, going 2-for-17 in his last five games, but perhaps Sunday's effort is a signal he is starting to turn things around at the plate. Garver is slashing .290/.353/.548 with two home runs, six runs and 10 RBI across 31 at-bats this postseason.

They'll look to finish off a three-game sweep of the O's on Tuesday night in Arlington, Texas. Robbie Grossman is riding the pine.

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: Crushes grand slam in win

Garver went 2-for-6 with a grand slam, racking up two runs and six RBI in Sunday's 11-8 win over the Orioles. Garver had his big moment in the fifth inning, when Jacob Webb took the mound in an attempt to keep the game close for the Orioles. The designated hitter's big fly pumped his team's lead up to seven runs and helped ensure that victory would not be relinquished. Sunday's home run also marked the first of his career in the postseason, during which he has slashed a modest .211/.250/.368 with two runs and five RBI across five games between the Twins and Rangers.

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: Batting third in Game 2

Garver will bat third as Texas' designated hitter in Game 2 of the ALDS at Baltimore on Sunday. Garver didn't register a plate appearance in the Rangers' first three playoff games, but he'll join the starting nine Sunday for Game 2 against the Orioles. The 32-year-old finished the season in an 0-for-11 slump but posted a .276/.400/.494 slash line with six homers over 26 games in September and had an .870 OPS for the season.

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: Sitting out Game 1

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: Absent from lineup again

Garver is not in the lineup Wednesday for Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Rays. The Rangers are sticking with the exact same lineup that produced a Game 1 victory. That means Garver is again sitting out in favor of Robbie Grossman at designated hitter even as Grossman went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Tuesday (though he did draw a walk).

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: Not in lineup for Game 1

Garver is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's AL Wild Card Series opener against the Rays. Garver was the Rangers' primary designated hitter down the stretch but will begin Game 1 versus the Rays on the bench. Manager Bruce Bochy has decided he likes the matchup of Robbie Grossman against Tyler Glasnow better.

  • Rangers' Mitch Garver: Not in starting nine

Garver will hit the bench Saturday against Seattle. Garver hasn't caught a game since Sept. 2 but has served as the designated hitter for all but two games since that date. After a pair of hitless outings, he's seemingly due for a rest, so Robbie Grossman will take his spot in the lineup.
