Pivetta (elbow) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. The next milestones for Pivetta are throwing an up-and-down session Thursday in Cleveland that will be followed by a live batting practice. After that, the team will decide if the right-hander needs a rehab assignment, although manager Alex Cora said he prefers the pitcher make at least one rehab start.... See More ... See Less

Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Set for bullpen session Saturday
Pivetta (elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Pivetta will play catch from 120 feet Thursday, and if all goes well, he'll take a big step forward in his recovery from a right elbow strain by getting back on the mound this weekend. The right-hander will likely need to complete multiple bullpen sessions before he's cleared to face hitters in live batting practice. After that, Pivetta will likely require a brief minor-league rehab assignment to get stretched back out, so he could be hard pressed to make it back from the injured list in the minimum 15 days. A return in the first or second week of May could be realistic, provided Pivetta avoids any setbacks while ramping back up.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Not on mound yet
Pivetta (elbow) continues to play catch but hasn't yet advanced to mound work, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Pivetta was placed on the 15-day injured list and is first eligible to return Sunday, but he's not yet ready to help a Red Sox rotation that has been hit by the injury bug of late, as Garrett Whitlock (oblique) joined him on the IL this week. It's likely Pivetta will need at least one rehab start before rejoining the club.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Slated to play catch Saturday
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Pivetta (elbow) will play catch Saturday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Pivetta landed on the injured list just three days ago with a right elbow flexor strain, so it's a good sign that he's already been cleared to throw. The hope is that the right-hander won't be sidelined long. Cooper Criswell is expected to be called up from Triple-A Worcester to fill Pivetta's spot in the Red Sox's rotation.... See More ... Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: May not have lengthy absence
Red Sox GM Craig Breslow said Tuesday that Pivetta (elbow) may not be on the injured list much beyond the 15-day minimum, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. The right-hander was placed on the injured list earlier Tuesday with a flexor strain, but the issue apparently isn't a serious concern. Still, it's worth keeping an eye on Pivetta's recovery given the nature of the injury. Cooper Criswell and Chase Anderson are the likely candidates to receive a look in the rotation while Pivetta is sidelined.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Heads to IL with flexor strain
Pivetta was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Red Sox on Tuesday with a right elbow flexor strain, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Pivetta has been an early-season bright spot for the Red Sox, allowing just one run with a 13:1 K:BB over 11 innings covering his first two starts. After sustaining the injury coming out of his most recent start last Wednesday, however, Pivetta will be on the shelf for a least a couple weeks and potentially much longer, given the nature of the injury. It's not clear yet who might fill Pivetta's spot in the rotation, but Cooper Criswell, Chase Anderson and Josh Winckowski look to be the top candidates.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Hurls five scoreless frames
Pivetta (1-1) earned the win Wednesday, allowing five hits and one walk over five scoreless innings against the Athletics. He struck out three. Pivetta had it going again Wednesday, retiring 10 of the first 12 batters he faced while allowing only one extra-base hit in the contest. The veteran right-hander has now given up just one run over his first two starts, posting a 13:1 K:BB over that brief span. He'll look to continue his phenomenal start to the 2024 campaign next week when the Red Sox host the Orioles.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: No support in loss
Pivetta dropped to 0-1 in Friday's 1-0 loss to the Mariners, allowing one run on three hits and zero walks while striking out 10 over six innings. Pivetta was dominant, allowing his lone run on a J.P. Crawford solo homer in the sixth inning. However, the Red Sox couldn't solve George Kirby, saddling Pivetta with the loss. The 31-year-old right-hander is expected to be a major piece in Boston's rotation after going 10-9 with a 4.04 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 183:50 K:BB last season. He's in line for a road matchup next week against the A's.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Fans nine in finale
Pivetta allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out nine over six innings in Saturday's spring start against the Twins. Pivetta finished out his Grapefruit League work on Saturday, raising his strikeout total to 22 over 18 innings. The right-hander will start Boston's second game of the season, which will take place Friday in Seattle.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Makes first spring start
Pivetta struck out one over two hitless and scoreless innings in Saturday's spring start against the Rays. Pivetta, who made his first Grapefruit League start, is on pace to open the 2024 season in the rotation. The right-hander spent the beginning of 2023 as a starter then moved to the bullpen, where he thrived to the point the Red Sox had him finish the season in the rotation. He had a 2.37 ERA with 38 strikeouts over five September starts.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Preps for Saturday's start
Pivetta is expected to start Saturday's split-squad game against Tampa Bay, Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Pivetta prepared for the outing by tossing two innings in the bullpen Wednesday. He had been tentatively scheduled to start Tuesday, but Kutter Crawford started instead. Saturday will be Pivetta's spring debut.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Slated for debut Tuesday
Pivetta is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut Tuesday versus the Cardinals, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Though he'll be integrated into the spring pitching schedule after Tanner Houck, Garrett Whitlock, Brayan Bello and Lucas Giolito, Pivetta and the latter two pitchers are still looking like locks for the Red Sox's Opening Day rotation. Pivetta split time between the bullpen and rotation in 2023, but he was one of Boston's top pitchers during the second half of the campaign, pitching to a 3.30 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 102:19 K:BB in 73.2 innings over his final 16 outings (eight starts).... Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Agrees to terms with Boston
Pivetta signed a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the Red Sox on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Pivetta receives a $2.15 million salary increase in his final year of team control. The 30-year-old recorded a 4.04 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with a 183:50 K:BB across 142.2 innings last season -- easily his best statline since joining the Red Sox in 2020.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Brilliant in 10th win
Pivetta (10-9) earned the win Friday, allowing two hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Orioles. He struck out 10. Pivetta ended his season on a high note, notching his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the year. The 30-year-old righty was fantastic throughout September with a 2.43 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 43:5 K:BB in 33.1 innings. Pivetta ends the year with career lows in ERA (4.04) and WHIP (1.12) with 183:50 K:BB over 142.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Logs quality start
Pivetta did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing two runs on four hits over 6.1 innings against Toronto. He struck out six. It's the first time Pivetta pitched six or more innings since July 31. Since rejoining the Red Sox rotation earlier this month, he's gone 0-2 with a 4.41 ERA and 21 strikeouts in three starts covering 16.1 innings. The 30-year-old Pivetta will likely finish out the season as a starter with James Paxton (knee) sidelined. He's currently slated for a home matchup with the White Sox in his next outing.... Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Stuck with loss despite 10 Ks
Pivetta (9-9) took the loss Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Yankees, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out 10. The right-hander was dominant through five frames in his return to the rotation, retiring the first eight batters he faced and not allowing a runner past first base, but he faded late and got the hook after five of the first six New York batters reached base in the sixth. It marks the third time this season Pivetta has fanned double-digit batters but the first time since July 31, as he'd spent the last month working out of the bullpen. He earned his punchouts Wednesday with 31 called or swinging strikes among his 90 pitches. With James Paxton (knee) done for the year, Pivetta figures to remain a starter the rest of the way.... Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Moving into rotation
Pivetta will start for the Red Sox on Tuesday against the Yankees, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Pivetta will transition back into a rotation role over the final three weeks of the regular season after James Paxton was officially shut down Sunday due to right knee inflammation. The 30-year-old holds a 4.54 ERA and 150:47 K:BB through 117 innings (12 starts, 22 relief appearances) this season with Boston.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Gets little help in loss
Pivetta (9-8) took the loss Wednesday, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings as the Red Sox fell 3-1 to the Rays. He struck out five. Making his first start since Aug. 15, Pivetta wasn't particularly efficient and got the hook after 85 pitches (58 strikes), but he also got little support from his offense. The right-hander's impressive run as a bulk reliever after the All-Star break is now well in the rearview mirror, and since the beginning of August, Pivetta has a 5.97 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 40:13 K:BB through 28.2 innings. He should return to long relief after this spot start.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Starting Wednesday
Pivetta will start Wednesday's game against the Rays, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. After picking up a three-inning save in his most recent relief appearance Saturday, Pivetta is now set to make his 12th start of the season. Over his 56.2 innings as a starter this season, Pivetta has turned in a 5.88 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 17.1 K-BB%, with all of those ratios representing stark downturns from what he's provided as a reliever. Since Pivetta hasn't tossed more than 40 pitches in an outing since Aug. 20, the Red Sox could look to deploy the right-hander as more of a tandem starter in front of Brandon Walter or another member of the bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Nick Pivetta: Nabs three-inning save
Pivetta gave up a run on two hits over three innings Saturday to record his first save of the season in a 9-5 win over the Royals. He struck out five without walking a batter. A solo shot by MJ Melendez in the ninth inning was the only blemish on Pivetta's performance. The right-hander hasn't had the same success lately in long relief that he did right after the All-Star break, and over 24 innings since the beginning of August he carries a 6.00 ERA and 1.46 WHIP despite a 35:11 K:BB. Unless the Red Sox get desperate in their attempt to claw back into the playoff picture, Pivetta seems unlikely to return to the rotation in 2023.... See More ... See Less
