Player Outlook
After being limited to 96 games in 2022, Tyler O'Neill's stated goal last offseason was to tailor his workouts to prevent future injury. It didn't work, as O'Neill played just 72 contests in 2023 due to back, knee and foot problems. When on the field, the 28-year-old's production sagged to just a .715 OPS and nine homers in 266 plate appearances. O'Neill's plate discipline actually trended in a positive direction for the second straight year, but his quality of contact also dropped off again so perhaps he's best off returning to the ultra aggressiveness he displayed during his breakout 2021 campaign. He was traded to Boston this offseason, which not only signals a more secure role but a major upgrade in home park factors. Durability remains a significant concern, but he should produce for fantasy managers while healthy.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Eyeing Tuesday return

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he's hopeful for O'Neill (calf) to return to the Grapefruit League lineup Tuesday versus the Rays, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Cora acknowledged that if O'Neill isn't ready to play Tuesday, the outfielder's availability for the March 28 season opener versus the Mariners would start to become more of a question mark, but for now, the Red Sox are expecting him to be ready to go for the start of the campaign. If O'Neill doesn't make enough progress in his recovery from the sore left calf, the Red Sox would likely be able to open up everyday roles in the outfield for both Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela alongside Jarren Duran.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Scratched Friday with tight calf

O'Neill was scratched from the Red Sox' Grapefruit League lineup Friday due to left calf tightness, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. O'Neill just returned from a calf injury earlier this week and has evidently had it flare up on him again. He had been slated to serve as Boston's designated hitter Friday, but that slot will now be filled by Nick Yorke. It's not clear at this point whether this setback could jeopardize O'Neill's availability for Opening Day, but given his injury history, the team is likely to be very cautious with the 28-year-old.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Back Tuesday

O'Neill (calf) is starting in right field and batting fifth Tuesday against the Cardinals, Tyler Milliken of 985 The Sports Hub reports. His return from calf tightness was delayed one more day than expected, but he'll end up missing less than a week. O'Neill is on track to be a regular in the middle of Boston's lineup this season. Injuries limited him to 168 games for the Cardinals over the last two seasons.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Expected back Tuesday

O'Neill (calf) is slated to rejoin the Red Sox's Grapefruit League lineup Tuesday versus the Cardinals, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. O'Neill had been expected to return to action Monday against the Pirates after missing a few days with left calf tightness, but the Red Sox elected to give him one more day off to heal. The 28-year-old is expected to see most of his starts in left field for Boston this season.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Nursing calf tightness

O'Neill won't travel with the Red Sox to the Dominican Republic this weekend for their exhibition games against the Rays due to a left calf injury, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globereports. O'Neill hit a double and home run and stole a base in his last Grapefruit League game Tuesday but evidently developed some calf tightness either in that contest or during Wednesday's off day. The good news is the Red Sox believe he'll be ready to play when they return to Florida on Monday, so the club is seemingly acting cautiously by holding him out of games in the Dominican Republic.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Swats first spring homer

O'Neill started in left field and went 2-for-2 with a double, a walk, a home run, three RBI and two additional runs scored in Tuesday's spring game against the Rays. O'Neill is 4-for-14 with two extra-base hits and two steals over six Grapefruit League games. It looks like the Red Sox want him to be the primary left fielder. He's started in left field in all six games while Masataka Yoshida has served the designated hitter in five of those outings.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Expected to be primary left fielder

O'Neill is expected to see most of his playing time for the Red Sox this season in left field, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Boston isn't giving up hope of Masataka Yoshida improving his outfield defense, but at the moment it sounds like most of his starts will be out of the designated hitter spot. The trickle-down effect means there's an opening in right field, where Wilyer Abreu looks like the favorite to start. Worth keeping in mind, however, is that the Red Sox have been connected to some free-agent outfielders, which would shake things up.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Avoids arbitration with new team

The Red Sox and O'Neill avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.85 million contract Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. O'Neill surely didn't want to go to an arbitration hearing with his new team and now won't have to. The outfielder has been plagued by injuries the last two seasons but is hoping a change of scenery in his walk year leads to a rebound.

  • Red Sox's Tyler O'Neill: Shipped to Boston

The Cardinals traded O'Neill (foot) to the Red Sox on Friday in exchange for Nick Robertson and Victor Santos (undisclosed), Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. After trading Alex Verdugo to the Yankees on Tuesday, the Red Sox will now bring in O'Neill to fill their opening in the outfield. O'Neill slashed .231/.312/.403 with nine homers and 21 RBI across 266 plate appearances last season while battling a multitude of injuries. No updates have been provided regarding the foot injury that put an early end to O'Neill's season, but he'll be in the mix to secure a starting spot in Boston's outfield when he's healthy.

  • Cardinals' Tyler O'Neill: Out with foot sprain

O'Neill was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a sprained right foot, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. It's unclear when exactly O'Neill suffered the injury, but he was mired in a 1-for-18 slump over his previous five games. The 27-year-old will be eligible to be reinstated during the final week of the regular season, but the Cardinals could opt to hold him out with nothing of consequence to play for. Juan Yepez was recalled in a corresponding move, though it'll be Richie Palacios taking O'Neill's place in left field Sunday.

O'Neill is out of the lineup Wednesday at Atlanta. Alec Burleson is filling the DH role.

  • Cardinals' Tyler O'Neill: Big night in Tuesday's win

O'Neill went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, a second run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 10-6 win over Atlanta. The 28-year-old outfielder put together his first multi-hit performance since Aug. 11, while his second-inning shot off Michael Soroka gave O'Neill homers in back-to-back games, and seven in 28 contests since the beginning of August. Sustained success has been tough for O'Neill to come by in 2023, but a 5-for-12 start to September offers some hope he could be poised for a big final month.

  • Cardinals' Tyler O'Neill: Swats three-run homer

O'Neill went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in a loss to the Pirates on Saturday. O'Neill gave the Cardinals an early lead with a three-run shot in the second inning, but Pittsburgh rallied late to take the win. The long ball was his eighth in what has been another injury-plagued season for O'Neill, as he's missed over 70 games due to back and knee issues. The outfielder has largely struggled when he has been able to play, slashing .232/.315/.411 with 19 RBI, 24 runs, four steals and a 26.7 percent strikeout rate over 232 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Tyler O'Neill: Returns to lineup

O'Neill (knee) is starting in left field and batting sixth Friday against Pittsburgh. Left knee soreness kept O'Neill from playing Thursday, but the issue seems to have subsided ahead of Friday's series opener with the Pirates. O'Neill has been having a tough time at the plate recently, going just 2-for-18 with seven strikeouts across his last six games.

  • Cardinals' Tyler O'Neill: Dealing with more knee soreness

O'Neill is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Padres due to left knee discomfort, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports. O'Neill has dealt with the knee issue off and on for the bulk of August. He's unavailable off the bench Wednesday, though it's unclear at this point whether O'Neill's absence might extend into the weekend. Richie Palacios will pick up the start in left field Wednesday in place of O'Neill.

O'Neill (knee) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 4-1 loss to the Padres. O'Neill sat out with knee discomfort Sunday, but it was a minor enough issue for him to only miss one game. The outfielder played the full game in left field, which should alleviate concerns about the injury. He's up to four steals on the year while slashing .236/.323/.405 across 60 contests.
