In the spring of 2022, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. famously stated that 2021 was a trailer and now fans will see a movie. Like most sequels, the team and the player has failed to deliver on promises. Guerrero's 2021 nomadic season in friendly run environments helped him established career hights he has failed to come close to in each of the past two seasons. Management tweaked Rogers Centre before the 2023 season, but that did not prevent Guerrero's overall numbers from sliding for a second consecutive season as he and the rest of the club struggled to produce runs despite plenty of traffic on the bases throughout the season. If you treat 2021 as an outlier rather than a ceiling, 2024 Guerrero Jr. should not disappoint you given his skills provide a very high floor. Just remember that sequels are rarely better than the original and Vlady's 2021 season is a cult classic that should be appreciated rather than expected.

It's the third homer of the year for Guerrero, though he's gotten off to a slow start at the plate, going 10-for-50 with five RBI through his first 13 games. The 25-year-old Guerrero hit at least 30 homers with 90 RBI in each of his past two campaigns -- he slashed .264/.345/.444 across 602 at-bats last season.

The 25-year-old slugger demolished a Zach Eflin cutter in the sixth inning, sending it 450 feet over the batter's eye in center field. The overwhelming majority of Guerrero's starts last season came from the third (110 games) or fourth (36 games) spots in the Toronto batting order.     Guerrero acknowledged Tuesday that he played through nagging injuries for most of 2023, but he spent the offseason getting into better shape in an effort to stay in one piece through the long season, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. "I achieved all the goals that I wanted to achieve," Guerrero said. "Of course, being in shape like I used to be, like I felt before in previous years, and I really believe that I achieved that goal. And I feel great right now." The first baseman dealt with knee and wrist issues last year, and while he missed only six games, he wasn't often playing at 100 percent. "If I tell you that I didn't play with pain in a lot of games, I would be lying," he said. "But that's not an excuse. It's part of the game. Sometimes you got to go on the field and grind, even if everything hurts. Also, I probably won't blame that because I didn't have the best preparation in the offseason last year." Guerrero seems to have learned his lesson when it comes to offseason prep, as he reported to camp both trimmer and stronger. If improved fitness translates into better results at the plate, the 24-year-old could recapture the MVP-level form he displayed in 2021.

It's the largest salary ever awarded by an arbitration panel, although the amount falls well short of the $31 million deal Juan Soto reached with the Yankees in January to avoid arbitration. Guerrero's numbers dropped in nearly every statistical category last season compared to the marks he set in 2022, but the slugging first baseman will receive a $5.4 million raise nonetheless.
