Senzel was scratched from Washington's lineup ahead of Thursday's game versus the Dodgers due to a stomach illness. Ildemaro Vargas will cover third base instead and bat eighth while Senzel is under the weather. The 28-year-old has hit safely in three of his last four games, homering twice.... See More ... Nationals' Nick Senzel: Goes yard in Wednesday's loss
Senzel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 11-2 loss to the Dodgers. The 28-year-old third baseman produced the Nationals' first run of the night in the second inning by launching a Landon Knack fastball over the fence in left-center field. Senzel has two homers on the season with both coming in the last three games, but he's gone just 5-for-25 with a 2:9 BB:K since returning from the thumb injury he suffered Opening Day. His spot in the starting lineup seems fairly secure unless Brady House forces an early promotion, but Senzel's fantasy upside remains limited.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Blasts first homer
Senzel went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's 6-0 win over the Astros. Senzel's first homer as a National came in the sixth inning off Astros' reliever Tayler Scott. The third baseman had struck out in his first two at-bats Sunday and had accumulated just three singles in 17 at-bats following his return from a fractured thumb prior to depositing the 2-2 pitch over the left-center field wall. Senzel is coming off a season in which he hit .236 with a career-high 13 home runs in 301 at-bats for Cincinnati.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Out of Friday's lineup
Senzel is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus Houston. Senzel started the past three games after being reinstated from the injured list Monday and will receive a day off after going 2-for-11 with a walk and three strikeouts. Ildemaro Vargas will man the hot corner and bat ninth Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Activated from injured list
The Nationals reinstated Senzel (thumb) from the 10-day injured list Monday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Senzel landed on the 10-day IL after he fractured his right thumb while fielding grounders before the Nationals' season opener. He played three games with Double-A Harrisburg as part of his rehab assignment and went 4-for-7 with one double, one RBI and three walks. Senzel is starting at third base and batting sixth for Monday's game against the Dodgers, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Set to start rehab assignment
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Saturday that Senzel (thumb) will begin his rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg on Monday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Senzel was placed on the 10-day injured list after he fractured his thumb fielding grounders ahead of the Nationals' season opener. Martinez noted that Senzel reported no problems while throwing and hitting Friday. While Senzel works his way back from his thumb injury, Trey Lipscomb will continue to start at third base.... Nationals' Nick Senzel: Placed on IL
The Nationals placed Senzel on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a fractured right thumb, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Senzel broke his thumb while fielding grounders ahead of Thursday's season opener, and he is expected to be out 3-to-4 weeks as a result. Ildemaro Vargas started in Senzel's place at third base Thursday, though most of the reps at the hot corner could end up going to Trey Lipscomb, who was selected from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move.... Nationals' Nick Senzel: Suffers broken thumb
Senzel broke his thumb while fielding a groundball before Thursday's game against the Reds, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. The Nationals should offer more details following Thursday's game, but it sounds like Senzel may be facing an extended absence to begin the season. Ildemaro Vargas entered the lineup as Senzel's replacement and figures to see regular reps at third base while he's out.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Scratched from lineup
Senzel was scratched from the Nationals' lineup for Thursday's game against the Reds, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Senzel reportedly injured a finger while fielding grounders ahead of Thursday's contest, though it remains unclear how serious his injury is. In the meantime, Ildemaro Vargas will fill in at third base and bat eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Wraps up tepid spring
Senzel batted .231 (9-for-39) over 15 Grapefruit League games with a 4:13 BB:K and only two extra-base hits, both doubles. The former Red signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Nationals in December, and Senzel's new team is hoping it has the same success reviving his career that it did with Jeimer Candelario in 2023. Senzel showed little this spring to indicate he's headed for a breakout season though, and while he'll be the Nats' Opening Day starter at third base, he may need to hit the ground running to keep the job with Trey Lipscomb making a big impression in camp and Brady House potentially ready to push for a spot in the majors as well.... Nationals' Nick Senzel: Slated to play Thursday
Senzel (illness) will bat fifth and play third base in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Senzel appeared set to return to spring action Wednesday before the team ultimately scratched him from the lineup. He is once again penciled into the batting order, so it appears he's ready to resume his preparations for the upcoming season. The 2016 second overall pick is looking to revitalize his career after fizzling out with Cincinnati.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Scratched from lineup
Senzel (illness) was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Senzel had been set to return from an illness, but the Nationals felt it was best to give him at least one more day to recover. Ildemaro Vargas will sub in for Senzel at third base Wednesday.... Nationals' Nick Senzel: Returns to lineup Wednesday
Senzel (illness) is back in the lineup for Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Red Sox, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. An illness kept Senzel off the field earlier in the week, but he's now ready to resume his preparations for the start of the 2024 season. Senzel has logged just one official at-bat so far this spring. The 28-year-old is expected to serve as Washington's everyday third baseman, health permitting.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Nick Senzel: Feeling ill Monday
Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Senzel won't be available for Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets due to an illness, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Senzel had apparently been in line to start Monday, but since the illness kept him from getting to the ballpark, the Nationals will turn to prospect Brady House to fill in at third base. Assuming he's able to quickly move past the illness, Senzel should have plenty of time in spring training to get in competitive at-bats as he prepares himself for an everyday role at third base to begin his first season with the Nationals.... Nationals' Nick Senzel: Will be everyday third baseman
Senzel is expected to serve as the Nationals' everyday third baseman in 2024, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Senzel bounced around all over the diamond in his last few seasons with the Reds, but third base is his natural position and it sounds like Washington plans to keep him there. Hopefully, sticking to one position will give Senzel a better chance of staying healthy, as injuries have been an ongoing issue for the 28-year-old. Senzel had massive splits in 2023, putting up a 1.008 OPS versus lefties and just a .497 OPS against righties. He'll have to greatly improve the latter number if he wants to keep an everyday job.... Nationals' Nick Senzel: Signs on with Nationals
Senzel signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Nationals on Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. He'll have the opportunity to earn an additional $1 million in incentives and will still be under team control in 2025. Senzel was non-tendered by the Reds last month after they decided they were unwilling to pay him a raise in arbitration. The former top prospect hasn't had even a .700 OPS since his rookie season and has dealt with numerous injuries. However, Senzel should at least have a short-side platoon role after slashing .348/.389/.619 against left-handers in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Nick Senzel: Non-tendered by Cincinnati
Senzel was non-tendered by the Reds on Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Senzel went as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft and showed well in his rookie season in 2019, but he's now 28 years old and has slashed just .232/.296/.344 over his last 273 games dating back to the beginning of the 2020 campaign. He'll look to revitalize his career with a new organization.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Nick Senzel: Homers in loss
Senzel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 15-6 loss to St. Louis. Per usual, Senzel got the start with a left-hander on the bump for the Cardinals. His fifth-inning home run meant little to the Reds, who were down 11-2 after the blast and were eliminated from the playoff chase with the loss. The home run was his career-high 13th. At 29-years-old, the once-promising prospect fell behind a class of younger talent that emerged in 2023. Senzel, who was shopped at the trade deadline, per Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer, enters an awkward offseason as an obvious trade candidate. He'll also be a third-year arbitration eligible player, which means other teams could hold off on trading for him, hoping to get him at a lesser price as a free agent if the Reds non-tender him.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Nick Senzel: Homers in loss
Senzel went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mets. Senzel has seen an uptick in plate appearances of late, as Reds manager David Bell gets him into contests whenever a lefty is throwing -- be that a starter or reliever. He's started four of the last six and entered as a pinch hitter in the two games he did not start. The infielder/outfielder has responded well to the increased usage, posting a .391/.391/.696 slash line with two home runs over the last eight games.... See More ... See Less -
Reds' Nick Senzel: Cracks homer in rare start
Senzel went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's 9-4 loss against St. Louis. Senzel hit a 408-foot blast off Drew Rom in the third inning for his 11th home run on the year. The five-year veteran was getting his first start since Sept. 1, and he has struggled to find playing time since Harrison Bader and Hunter Renfroe joined the Reds via waivers. Not that Senzel has deserved much more playing time -- he's slashing .223/.291/.383 in 89 games.... See More ... See Less
