Indians' Cal Quantrill: In line for short-rest start

Cleveland is tentatively planning to have Cal Quantrill start Saturday's game in Pittsburgh on three days' rest, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports. With Shane Bieber (shoulder) recently joining Zach Plesac (finger) on the injured list, Quantrill has been moved back into the rotation after spending most of the season in the bullpen. He turned in a strong showing as a starter in Tuesday's win over the Orioles, striking out four and allowing one run over four innings. Cleveland capped Quantrill at 60 pitches in that outing, so he likely won't be asked to push far past that level this weekend, especially since he'll be returning to the mound on short rest.

      Indians' Cal Quantrill: Takes no-decision

Cal Quantrill did not factor into the decision during Tuesday's win over Baltimore. He allowed one run on three hits and no walks while striking out four across four innings.Aside from giving up an RBI double to Maikel Franco in the second inning, Quantrill looked strong in what was expected to be another abbreviated outing. The 26-year-old has yet to throw more than 60 pitches in any of his 21 appearances this year, and Tuesday was no different, as he tossed 41 of his 60 pitches for strikes. Quantrill has shifted between the rotation and the bullpen this season; in fact, his last outing was a two-inning relief appearance. Overall, the right-hander has compiled a 3.11 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. He potentially lines up for a road start at Pittsburgh next week.

      Indians' Cal Quantrill: Rejoining rotation

Cal Quantrill is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of reports.A lighter schedule of games last week allowed Cleveland to move Quantrill to the bullpen following his June 6 start -- which also came against Baltimore -- but he'll be needed in the rotation again while the Tribe is in the midst of a stretch of 12 games in 12 days. Given that Quantrill hasn't tossed more than 60 pitches in any of his 20 appearances with the big club this season, fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to work more than four or five innings Tuesday.

Indians' Cal Quantrill: Heads back to bullpen

Cal Quantrill worked out of the bullpen Wednesday in Cleveland's 8-2 loss to St. Louis, striking out two over two scoreless frames while giving up one run and one walk.Quantrill had started in both his previous two outings, but Cleveland opted to temporarily move him out of the rotation after he was lit up for seven runs (five earned) while recording just four outs in a June 6 loss to the Orioles. The right-handed fared better while coming on in relief Wednesday after No. 3 starter Jean Carlos Mejia couldn't make it out of the first inning. Cleveland is expected to add Triston McKenzie from Triple-A Columbus this weekend to step in as the team's fourth starter, but the club will have a need for a No. 5 starter beginning next week while Zach Plesac (thumb) remains on the injured list. Quantrill and Sam Hentges -- who previously made four starts before moving to the bullpen -- could be the leading candidates to fill the opening in the rotation.

Indians' Cal Quantrill: Hit hard in loss

Cal Quantrill (0-2) allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits and no walks while striking out one in 1.1 innings to take the loss against the Orioles on Sunday.Quantrill was effective in his first start of the season Monday, but he struggled Sunday. He gave up a solo home run in the first inning and was pulled with one out in the second inning after he gave up four more runs. The right-hander has now posted a 3.41 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 31.2 innings across 19 appearances (two starts) this year. If he remains in the rotation, he tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Mariners on Saturday.

Indians' Cal Quantrill: Could start again Sunday

Cal Quantrill will start Sunday's game against the Orioles if he's not used out of the bullpen during Friday's series opener, Mandy Bell of reports.Quantrill got a spot start Monday, allowing one run on four hits across 3.2 innings in a no-decision against the White Sox. He now appears to be a strong candidate to make another start Sunday, though that decision is dependent on his usage in Friday's tilt.

Indians' Cal Quantrill: No-decision in spot start

Cal Quantrill allowed one run on four hits while striking out five over 3.2 innings against the White Sox on Monday. He did not factor into the decision.Making his first start of the season in the back end of a doubleheader, Quantrill pitched well. His lone blemish was an RBI single by Nick Madrigal in the third. The 26-year-old has been impressive with a 2.08 ERA and 25:11 K:BB over 30.1 innings, but his typical low-leverage/multi-inning role out of the bullpen doesn't offer much fantasy upside.

Indians' Cal Quantrill: Gets starting nod Monday

Cal Quantrill is slated to start for Cleveland in Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader with the White Sox, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports.Due to the doubleheader, Cleveland will temporarily shift to a six-man rotation, which paves the way for Quantrill to pick up his first start of 2021. Over his 17 appearances out of the bullpen, Quantrill has logged a 2.03 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB in 26.2 innings. After covering a season-high three innings out of the bullpen in his most recent outing May 26, Quantrill should be stretched out enough to give Cleveland four or five innings Monday. He'll likely shift back to a relief role following the start.

Indians' Cal Quantrill: Takes loss against Tigers

Cal Quantrill (0-1) took the loss in relief Wednesday as Cleveland was downed 1-0 by the Tigers, giving up one run on two hits over three innings. He struck out four without walking a batter. After Triston McKenzie gave Cleveland five scoreless innings, Quantrill got the call and kept the shutout going until the eighth, when a Niko Goodrum leadoff double led to the game's only run. Quantrill tossed 42 pitches (28 strikes) in his longest appearance of the season, but he's still unlikely to be ready for a full workload if, as expected, he makes his first start of the year during Monday's doubleheader.

Indians' Cal Quantrill: Snaps scoreless streak

Cal Quantrill gave up a run on three hits without recording a strikeout over one inning of work in Monday's 7-4 loss to the Angels. The right-hander worked the seventh inning Monday, and he allowed an RBI double to Jared Walsh on the heels of consecutive singles by Jose Rojas and Anthony Rendon. Quantrill hadn't allowed a run in 10.2 innings prior to his poor inning Monday. Overall, he's posted a 2.18 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 11:10 K:BB, with his 5.05 FIP indicating that he's been lucky not to have more runs on his ledger.
