Player Outlook
San Francisco has a strong track record of taking pitching castoffs from other organizations and making them into useful assets. In the case of Jake Junis, it was almost an extreme makeover because Kansas City's pitching development did little to make Junis better and even Junis's first year with the Giants could only get so much out of him as a starter. The club decided to turn Junis into a reliever in 2023 and he rewarded them and NL Only fantasy managers with a 20.4% K-BB% along with 96 strikeouts in 86 innings and 4 wins. The righty's best pitch has always been his slider, so the Giants encouraged him to spin it early and often, and he did so throwing it 62.5% of the time. It is a good thing he did too because his sinker was safely put into play 42% of the time and his changeup 27% of the time. Junis is at his best in a White Castle Special of heavy sliders, but the lack of an effective second pitch pigeonholes his role in the pen.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Hit in head with ball during BP

Junis (shoulder) was struck in the head by a ball during batting practice in Pittsburgh on Monday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Junis was down on the field for several minutes after a ball hit by a Pirates player caught him in the head. He was alert and responsive after eventually getting to his feet and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. Junis is currently on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement and had recently began a throwing program.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Not close to returning

Junis (shoulder) remains limited to throwing on flat ground, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Junis will be eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list this weekend, but it doesn't sound like he's close to returning. The 31-year-old is in the early stages of ramping things back up as he works his way back from a right shoulder impingement.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Lands on IL

The Brewers placed Junis on the 15-day injured list Saturday, retroactive to Wednesday, with a right shoulder impingement. Junis first reported a problem with his shoulder shortly after his start Tuesday against the Twins. The 31-year-old righty underwent imaging Friday, and although the results came back clean, the Brewers won't risk pushing it. The plan is for him to rest for a couple days before ramping back up, so an extended stay on the IL doesn't seem likely. Aaron Ashby was recalled from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move and will presumably take Junis' spot in Milwaukee's rotation.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Next start in doubt

Junis has been dealing with a shoulder issue since his last start Tuesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Brewers manager Pat Murphy said the team is still waiting for imaging results to come back on Junis' shoulder, which will offer more information on whether or not the right-hander will be able to make his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Monday versus the Reds. Should Junis miss his turn through the rotation, Aaron Ashby will come up from Triple-A Nashville to take his place.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Fires four efficient innings

Junis struck out four and allowed one run on three hits and a walk over four innings Tuesday against the Twins. He did not factor in the decision. Junis pounded the zone while firing 34 of his 47 pitches for strikes, but the Brewers clearly had a plan in place and went to the bullpen to begin the fifth inning. The right-hander missed out on the victory, but it was an encouraging first start of the season, one that could earn him a longer leash in subsequent outings. Junis may only have a couple turns to stake his claim to a rotation spot with Wade Miley (shoulder) nearing a rehab assignment.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Dealing with shoulder injury

Junis didn't pitch as scheduled Friday due to a shoulder injury, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Manager Pat Murphy said the team doesn't believe Junis' injury to be serious, but the Brewers will likely play it safe with the right-hander. Junis has posted a 5.91 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 10.2 innings this spring, but his chances at making Milwaukee's Opening Day rotation increased significantly after the Brewers optioned Aaron Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Friday.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Joining Milwaukee

Junis agreed to a one-year, $7 million contract with the Brewers on Monday, Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.com reports. Junis has been used out of the bullpen for the majority of the last two seasons with San Francisco (four starts in 63 outings), but McDaniel notes that Milwaukee plans to see what he can do as a starting pitcher. He should have a good chance to claim a spot near the back end of the Milwaukee rotation, especially following the departure of Corbin Burnes to the Orioles less than a week ago.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Out for season

The Giants placed Junis on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a cervical strain, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Junis was taken out of his appearance Saturday against the Dodgers after reporting neck tightness, and he will now be held out for the final week of the season. The 31-year-old righty logged a 3.87 ERA and 1.29 WHIP through 86 innings while posting a 96:21 K:BB. Joey Bart was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to fill Junis' roster spot.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Exits with neck tightness

Junis was lifted from Saturday's game against the Dodgers with neck tightness, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Junis was supposed to work in bulk relief for the Giants, but he covered just 1.1 innings before departing with the neck issue. Ross Stripling, another bulk relief option, replaced him to begin the bottom of the fifth. It's unclear what Junis' availability will be leading into the final week of the regular season.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Works four innings in bulk relief

Junis allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out five batters over four innings in bulk relief against the Rockies in Game 2 of a doubleheader Saturday. Scott Alexander started for San Francisco and got two outs before Junis entered in the first frame with a runner on second base. Junis surrendered a single to allow the inherited runner to score, and he yielded two runs of his own in the third inning before departing with two outs in the fifth. The right-hander has bounced between opening and pitching in bulk relief lately, tossing more than one frame in each of his past five outings. However, he hasn't pitched more than four innings in any appearance this season, and he's recorded just one decision -- a win -- over his past 22 games despite pitching to a solid 3.47 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 51:5 K:BB over 49.1 frames during that span.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Covers most innings Tuesday

Junis allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings during Tuesday's 11-8 loss to the Cubs. He did not factor in the decision. Junis led the Giants' staff in both innings pitched and pitches (44; 27 strikes), though it was far from a true bulk assignment. The right-hander remains a versatile option out of the bullpen, but he has been pitching roughly every fifth day for a few weeks. Junis has a 3.97 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 88:20 K:BB across 79.1 innings over 37 appearances (four starts). Given the length of Tuesday's outing, he could be available some time over the weekend against the Rockies, though he would line up to make his next outing versus the Guardians.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Getting start Thursday

Junis will start for the Giants on Thursday at San Diego, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Junis has primarily worked as a multi-inning reliever this season and will probably be piggybacked Thursday by Sean Manaea. San Francisco has a TBA listed for Friday's game against the Padres, then it'll be Kyle Harrison (Saturday) and Alex Cobb (Sunday) in the final two games of the four-game series.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Snags win Wednesday

Junis (4-3) allowed one hit and struck out one without walking a batter over one scoreless inning to earn the extra-inning win over the Phillies on Wednesday. Camilo Doval struggled in a blown save, failing to record an out while giving up a game-tying home run to Bryce Harper in the ninth inning. Junis kept the game tied, and the Giants took the lead for good in the 10th. Junis has endured mixed results since the start of July, allowing 10 runs (seven earned) over 26 innings across 13 appearances while serving as one of the Giants' many bulk relievers. Eight of his outings in that span have been longer than an inning. The right-hander had a middling 3.95 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 83:18 K:BB with a save and two holds over 70.2 innings this season.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Struggles as opener

Junis allowed two unearned runs on two hits and struck out one without walking a batter over 1.2 innings Sunday versus Atlanta. He did not factor in the decision. Junis was responsible for Orlando Arcia's second-inning two-run home run, but Wilmer Flores quickly got Junis off the hook in the third. This was a 43-pitch outing for the right-hander, which came after he threw 62 pitches Tuesday. While he's been in the mix to serve as an opener or bulk reliever, Junis is unlikely to work deep enough into games to get wins when he's starting. He's at a 4.00 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 82:18 K:BB through 69.2 innings over 33 appearances (three starts) this year.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Pitches well Tuesday

Junis allowed two hits and a walk while striking out seven over four shutout innings Tuesday versus the Rays. He did not factor in the decision. Junis threw 62 pitches (43 strikes) in a sharp outing, his fourth scoreless appearance in his last five trips to the mound. The right-hander continues to fill a swingman role, something that's suited the Giants well with a number of their pitchers this season. Junis is at a 4.10 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 81:18 K:BB through 68 innings over 32 appearances (two starts). Junis has past experience as a starter, but this was just the second time he's gone four innings all season, so he has a better chance of picking up wins if he's the one pitching behind an opener.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Making Tuesday's start

Junis is listed as the Giants' starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Rays, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Junis will likely work a few innings before turning the game over to a primary pitcher out of the bullpen. Southpaw Sean Manaea hasn't been used since covering four innings Aug. 9, so he would seem to be the most logical candidate to work in bulk relief while he's on five days' rest. Junis has posted a 2.03 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with a 15:1 K:BB over his last seven appearances (13.1 innings).

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Nabs save Friday

Junis recorded one strikeout in a perfect 11th inning to earn the save in Friday's 7-5 win over the Dodgers. The Giants currently have a routine bullpen day in their rotation, and this was it, leaving few arms available by the 11th inning. Junis was able to protect a two-run lead with ease, earning the first save of his major-league career in the process. He was effective in late May, but he's given up five runs over 9.2 innings across four appearances in June while typically working in lower-leverage spots. For the season, Junis owns a 4.12 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 48:16 K:BB over 39.1 innings as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen. He also has one hold and a 3-3 record.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Takes loss Saturday

Junis (3-3) allowed four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five over 2.2 innings, taking the loss Saturday versus the Cubs. Junis was again called on for a bulk-relief assignment, but the Cubs were able to do damage against him. Matt Mervis and Christopher Morel each took him deep for solo home runs, and Morel would add a two-run single. This was Junis' worst outing since he gave up five runs April 29 against the Padres. The right-hander is at a 4.58 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 44:16 K:BB through 35.1 innings this season. He may get another look behind an opener if neither Ross Stripling (back) nor Alex Wood (back) are ready to return by next weekend.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Picks up win as primary pitcher

Junis (3-2) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out four over 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday over the Brewers. Six pitchers combined for the shutout, and Junis led the way by getting seven outs. He hasn't given up a run over his last 6.1 innings, posting a 10:2 K:BB with four hits allowed in that span. The right-hander has a 4.13 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 33:14 K:BB over 28.1 innings through 14 relief appearances this season. The Giants continue to use Junis in a swingman role -- he and Sean Manaea, who had a hold with 1.1 scoreless innings Thursday, are options to serve as primary pitchers whenever manager Gabe Kapler opts for a bullpen day.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Could fill bulk-relief role Tuesday

Junis is expected to serve as a bulk reliever behind opener John Brebbia in Tuesday's game against the Cardinals, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports. Tuesday had been lefty Sean Manaea's turn in the rotation, but manager Gabe Kapler is expected to push the southpaw to the back of the Giants' pitching schedule to optimize matchups against the Cardinals' right-handed-heavy lineup. With that in mind, Manaea presumably won't be called upon to work in long relief during the three-game series with St. Louis, making Junis the top candidate to eat innings once Brebbia exits Tuesday after what will likely be a 1-to-2-inning start. Junis should be well rested after having not pitched since April 18, when he recorded eight outs in relief.
