Player Outlook
Estevan Florial has spent parts of the last four seasons in the majors, with increasing plate appearances each season. Last season, he spent most of September with the Yankees, posting a .635 OPS in 71 plate appearances. Before his callup, Florial dominated with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, putting up a .284/.380/.565 line in 482 plate appearances, featuring 28 homers and 25 stolen bases. However, he fanned 29.9 percent of the time, which will be the key to handling major league pitching. Florial will get that chance with the Guardians, after the Yankees dealt him to acquire pitcher Cody Morris. There is more opportunity with Cleveland, with only Steven Kwan assured of a spot in the Guardians outfield. Florial doesn't chase, but he makes terribly low contact on those he swings at outside of the zone. If the Guardians can fix that, Florial has the power and speed combination so treasured in the fantasy realm.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Sits down versus southpaw

Florial isn't in the Guardians' lineup for Saturday's game against the Athletics. With lefty Alex Wood set to start on the mound for Oakland, the left-handed bat of Florial will begin Saturday's contest in the dugout. His absence will move Josh Naylor into the DH spot while David Fry picks up a start at first base and bats second.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Three-hit effort Friday

Florial went 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored in Friday's 10-2 win over the Athletics. This was Florial's first multi-hit effort of the season. After a slow start, he's hit safely in four of his last six games while driving in all five of his RBI over that span. The outfielder is batting .235 with two home runs, a stolen base and four runs scored over 39 plate appearances, but it appears he is gaining traction as a regular in the lineup versus right-handed pitchers.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Playing time trending up

Florial will start in right field and bat seventh in Monday's game in Boston. It's the fourth straight start against a right-hander for Florial, and in the game he didn't start versus a lefty he came off the bench to hit a pinch-hit home run. Florial is 2-for-9 with two home runs and a 4:2 K:BB over that stretch. Ramon Laureano and Will Brennan will be on the bench Monday.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Goes yard again

Florial hit a solo home run as a pinch hitter in Sunday's 8-7 extra-inning win over the Yankees. Florial enjoyed a vengeful weekend, hitting his first two homers of the season against his former team over the last two days. The outfielder is still batting .190 through 25 plate appearances, to go with a 4:10 BB:K, but it looks like he's starting to build some momentum. Florial remains in a crowded competition for playing time between center field, right field and designated hitter, and he should have chances to draw into the lineup at least versus right-handed pitchers.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Lifts homer in nightcap

Florial went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Saturday's 8-2 loss to the Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader. Florial went 0-for-3 with a walk and two strikeouts in the matinee before getting his third hit and first homer as a Guardian -- against his former organization -- in the nightcap. The outfielder is still hitting a paltry .150 with one stolen base, one RBI, two runs scored and a triple over 24 plate appearances. Florial is competing with Ramon Laureano, Tyler Freeman and Will Brennan for playing time between center field, right field and designated hitter, and none of them have made compelling cases to grab a starting role so far.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Sitting versus southpaw

Florial is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Athletics. Florial is likely to start in center field most days as a strong-side platoon option, but he will take a seat Thursday with left-hander Alex Wood on the bump. Tyler Freeman will get the nod in center field instead and bat sixth.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Secures roster spot

Florial will be on the Guardians' Opening Day roster, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Florial hit .167 and struck out 20 times over 14 Cactus League games, but he was still able to leapfrog Myles Straw on the organizational depth chart. A left-handed hitter, Florial looks set to see playing time at least as a strong-side platoon option in center field. Tyler Freeman and Ramon Laureano are the Guardians' right-handed options for center, with that playing-time battle likely to extend beyond spring training.

  • Guardians' Estevan Florial: Pushing Straw for center field job

Florial is competing with Myles Straw this spring for the Guardians' center field job, Jason Lloyd of The Athletic reports. Straw has been the club's primary center fielder since being picked up from the Astros in 2021 and still offers Gold Glove-caliber defense, but he's slashed an anemic .229/.296/.284 over the last two campaigns. Florial, who was acquired via trade from the Yankees this offseason, has just a .609 OPS in 134 plate appearances at the major-league level but collected a .944 OPS with 28 homers and 25 steals in 2023 over 101 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 26-year-old has swing-and-miss issues (29.9 percent strikeout rate at SWB) but certainly would offer more fantasy intrigue than Straw. Florial is also out of minor-league options, so he'll undoubtedly make the Opening Day roster.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Absent from lineup

Florial is not in the lineup for Tuesday's contest against the Blue Jays. Florial was in center field for each of the Yankees' first seven games after he was called up, but the left-handed batter will take a seat for this one as Toronto sends southpaw Yusei Kikuchi to the bump. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will handle center field.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Slated for regular playing time

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Monday that Florial is "going to have an opportunity to play and to play a lot" down the stretch, Max Goodman of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Florial was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday, absorbing the roster spot vacated by Jasson Dominguez (elbow). The Yankees could turn to Florial to replace Dominguez as the team's regular center fielder, too, with Everson Pereira remaining in left field. The 25-year-old Florial has struggled in his big-league chances so far but posted a .944 OPS with 28 home runs and 25 stolen bases this season at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Florial will start in center field and bat seventh for the Yankees in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Red Sox.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Returns to big leagues

The Yankees selected Florial's contract from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday. He's taking the roster spot vacated by Jasson Dominguez (elbow), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Florial was removed from the Yankees' 40-man roster earlier this season but has made his way back on after putting up a .944 OPS with 28 home runs and 25 stolen bases with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 25-year-old has struggled during his brief time in the majors, however, and there's no guarantee that he'll see much playing time in the final weeks.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Outrighted to Triple-A

Florial cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by the Yankees on Friday. It's a bit surprising that the former top prospect cleared waivers, but the Yankees are surely happy to keep him around as outfield depth. Florial has just a .579 OPS over 30 games at the major-league level.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Likely to make Opening Day roster

Yankees manager Aaron Boone implied Tuesday that Florial has a chance to make the Opening Day roster, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. Florial was believed to be battling Rafael Ortega for the final spot on the roster, but after Ortega was granted his release, it appears the former top prospect has won a job. While Florial didn't impress with the bat during the Grapefruit League with a .536 OPS over 53 at-bats, he did show well with the glove, and the 25-year-old will likely be a defensive replacement in the late innings when needed. The Yankees also could make a move for another outfielder before Thursday, but it appears that right now Florial is locked in to a bench role.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Optioned to Triple-A

Florial was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. Florial logged just 11 at-bats in two weeks up with the big club. The move opens a spot on the active roster for Anthony Rizzo (head).

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Back in big leagues

Florial was recalled by the Yankees on Saturday. Florial got into eight games for the Yankees earlier this season, going 1-for-20 with eight strikeouts. He'll give the team some extra outfield depth with Andrew Benintendi (wrist) on the injured list and could be needed to start some games, but he's yet to show anything that would get fantasy managers excited.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Sent back to minors

Florial was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Tuesday's win over the Mets. Florial entered as a defensive replacement late in Tuesday's contest but didn't register a plate appearance. The 24-year-old was promoted by New York last week and appeared in four games during his brief stint in the majors, going 1-for-9 with an RBI, a run and four strikeouts.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: On bench for third straight

Florial remains out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mets. The Yankees have seemingly tabled any plans of deploying Florial as an everyday player, as the lefty-hitting outfielder will be on the bench against a right-handed pitcher (Taijuan Walker) for the third consecutive game. Aaron Judge will pick up another start in center field at Florial's expense, with Oswaldo Cabrera effectively replacing Florial in right field.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Sitting again Monday

Florial will sit Monday versus the Mets. Florial will be on the bench for the second straight game and third time in four contests overall. Aaron Judge will shift over to center field while Marwin Gonzalez starts in right field and bats ninth against the Mets.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Takes seat Sunday

Florial is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays. Florial will take a seat for the series finale after going 1-for-9 with an RBI and a run while starting in three of the Yankees' last four games. Though Florial has gotten off to an underwhelming start since being called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a few days ago, the Yankees don't yet appear prepared to pull the plug on him as their primary center fielder. Aaron Hicks will spell Florial in center field Sunday, however.

  • Yankees' Estevan Florial: Sitting Friday

Florial isn't starting Friday against the Blue Jays. Florial started the last two games and went 0-for-5 with a run and two strikeouts. Aaron Judge is shifting to center field while Oswaldo Cabrera starts in right.
