Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock: Suffers loss Sunday

Garrett Whitlock (8-4) allowed one run on one hit while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning in a loss to the White Sox on Sunday.Whitlock came in to try and extend the game to extra innings after the Boston Red Sox tied it up in the top of the ninth but was unable to do so. The 25-year-old struck out the first two batters he faced before Leury Garcia connected on an 0-2 fastball and sent it over the wall in center field to walk it off for the White Sox. Whitlock has now given up at least a run in three of his last four outings but still has been pretty effective overall. He has a 1.92 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 78:16 K:BB over 70.1 innings to go along with two saves and 13 holds. The Red Sox clearly trust him in high-leverage situations and should continue to use him in those situations during the final stretch of the regular season.

Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock: Picks up win

Garrett Whitlock (8-3) allowed one hit and one walk over two scoreless innings to pick up the win over the White Sox on Saturday.Whitlock bounced back after being part of a spectacular meltdown by the Boston Red Sox five days earlier. Saturday's game took on a similar feel -- Boston jumped to a big lead early, only to let the opponent back in with shoddy fielding and suspect relief pitching -- but Whitlock prevented any late damage in this one. Despite some recent hiccups, Whitlock is viewed as a key piece to Boston's late-game strategy.

Red Sox's Garrett Whitlock: Blows save, takes loss

Garrett Whitlock (7-3) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out two over 1.1 innings to pick up a blown save and a loss against the Rays on Monday.Whitlock was called on to close out the game with Boston up, 9-8, in the top of the ninth, but Austin Meadows' inside-the-park home run forced extra frames. It was a tough-luck situation for Whitlock, who watched the entire outfield misplay Meadows' smash off the wall. Another error in the 10th inning led to a run and earned him the loss. Whitlock has been good for Boston and should continue to work high-leverage spots along with Adam Ottavino, while the team gets a handle on its COVID-19 outbreak. Matt Barnes, the team's nominal closer who was also caught up in the outbreak, slipped dramatically before landing on the COVID-19 list, posting a 15.88 ERA over 10 August outings.

Garrett Whitlock allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth inning to earn the hold in Sunday's 1-0 victory over Oakland. With Adam Ottavino unavailable to pitch a third consecutive day, manager Alex Cora went with Whitlock to caretake the eighth inning for closer Matt Barnes in the ninth. He worked around a wild pitch that put a man in scoring position by inducing a couple of infield popups to end the frame. He's been one of the better stories in the Boston Red Sox's bullpen: a Rule 5 draft pick emerging as a key component for the team with the best record in the American League. Whitlock is 3-0 with a 0.89 ERA, a 1.23 WHIP and 22 strikeouts over the last 13 outings, spanning 20.1 innings.
