The 21-year-old underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee in early January, so his move to the 60-day IL was an eventuality. He's facing a projected 6-to-8-month recovery, so a return for September is likely the best-case scenario for Mauricio, and there's a real possibility he sits out the entirety of 2024.

  Mauricio has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in his knee and will require surgery, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. Mauricio suffered the injury on Sunday during Dominican Winter League play while running the bases. A timetable for the youngster's return is not yet clear but should be available following the operation. At the very least, he is certainly not going to be ready in time for Opening Day. Mauricio had been set to compete with Brett Baty for the Mets' third base job, which means Baty is now the heavy favorite to man the hot corner in the opener, with Mark Vientos also in the mix.

Stearns also noted that he's not viewing any of the trio of players as a frontrunner for the gig, and it's possible no winner will be declared by Opening Day. The Mets have said Jeff McNeil will be confined mostly to second base, which would indicate that if Mauricio receives everyday at-bats then it would likely come at the hot corner.   It looked like Mauricio might have an "in" with the Mets as far back as June, but better late than never, right? The details of his promotion are hush-hush, other than that it's happening Friday, but given that the Mets have made a big show of packing it in for 2023, it seems like a true audition for 2024. He's gotten plenty of exposure to both left field and second base this year, so he and Jeff McNeil figure to share those spots in some form or fashion. Mauricio isn't a disciplined hitter, but his contact is of a particularly high quality (91 mph average exit velocity and 116 mph max exit velocity) and he's made a lot more of it this year. He's also arriving hot, having hit .316 (24 for 76) with six homers in his past 18 games. His sort of upside is worth keeping close in case he makes good on it right away.

A .242/.290/.449 batting line isn't much to write home about, but it's good for a 20-year-old in High-A ball, and he showed noteworthy grit by working his way out of a lengthy early-season slump that lasted from late May to mid-July. He also didn't look daunted after getting promoted to Double-A, batting .323/.364/.452 across eight games there to close out the campaign. Expect Mauricio to open next season in Double-A, where he'll be expected to continue working on trimming his strikeout rate while getting to his power consistently in game action.

After a difficult June in which the 20-year-old shortstop hit just .202, he's in the midst of an excellent July that's seen him bat .293 with five homers, two steals, 14 RBI and 11 runs across 19 games. Mauricio's season line -- .247/.289/.459 with 13 homers and six steals -- still leaves something to be desired, but he's made positive strides nonetheless, showing increased power and more than holding his own despite being three years younger than the average player in the High-A East. He's still raw, as he simply doesn't have a ton of minor-league experience and his plate discipline remains a work in progress, so the Mets would do well to give him plenty of development time.
