Player Outlook
Unfortunately Ronny Mauricio tore his ACL playing winter ball in mid-December, so he will miss most or all the 2024 season. Pre-injury, Mauricio had top-of-the-scale exit velocities and bottom-of-the-scale swing decisions, making for a very difficult evaluation. Among qualified hitters, only Salvador Perez, Eddie Rosario and Javier Baez had a higher O-Swing% than Mauricio's 42.9%, and only Ronald Acuna, Matt Olson, Shohei Ohtani and Jake Burger had a higher maxEV than Mauricio's 117.3 mph. A switch-hitting infielder who turns 23 in April, Mauricio will enter the season eligible only at second base in most formats. He only has 60th percentile sprint speed but went 7-for-7 on stolen-base attempts in the majors and 24-for-31 at Triple-A. His flyball rates at Triple-A and the majors were below 28%, so he is unlikely to get the most of his raw power without an improved launch angle. He will likely be on the 60-day injured list for at least the first few months of the season, but a return late in the year hasn't been ruled out.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Shifts to 60-day IL

Mauricio (knee) was placed on the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. The 21-year-old underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee in early January, so his move to the 60-day IL was an eventuality. He's facing a projected 6-to-8-month recovery, so a return for September is likely the best-case scenario for Mauricio, and there's a real possibility he sits out the entirety of 2024.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Undergoes ACL surgery

Mauricio underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. Mauricio suffered the injury last month while playing in the Dominican Winter League. Per the Mets, a typical timeline for a return to game action from this procedure is 8-to-12 months, which would indicate the young infielder could be out until September even in a best-case scenario. Mauricio had been slated to compete for the third base job with the Mets, but the bulk of those duties now figure to fall to Brett Baty.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Surgery imminent

Mauricio is slated to undergo surgery to repair a torn right ACL shortly after New Year's Day, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Mauricio suffered the injury Dec. 10 while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic. The Mets have not revealed a potential timetable for the young infielder's return to action, but it seems likely that he'll be out until sometime after the All-Star break. With Mauricio sidelined, Brett Baty is the favorite to see the lion's share of starts at third base for the Mets.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Diagnosed with torn ACL

Mauricio has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in his knee and will require surgery, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. Mauricio suffered the injury on Sunday during Dominican Winter League play while running the bases. A timetable for the youngster's return is not yet clear but should be available following the operation. At the very least, he is certainly not going to be ready in time for Opening Day. Mauricio had been set to compete with Brett Baty for the Mets' third base job, which means Baty is now the heavy favorite to man the hot corner in the opener, with Mark Vientos also in the mix.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Injured during winter ball

Mauricio suffered an apparent leg injury Sunday while playing in the Domincan Winter League, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports. Mauricio came up lame while making an abrupt stop as he halted a stolen-base attempt. He was down for a bit before eventually walking off the field gingerly with the training staff. There are no more specifics at this point regarding the exact nature of the injury or how severe it might be, but Mauricio's winter ball stint might be over. The 22-year-old is slated to compete for the Mets' third base job during spring training.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Team not expected to add 3B help

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns indicated Monday that he expects the team's starting third baseman to come out of the group of Mauricio, Brett Baty and Mark Vientos, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Stearns also noted that he's not viewing any of the trio of players as a frontrunner for the gig, and it's possible no winner will be declared by Opening Day. The Mets have said Jeff McNeil will be confined mostly to second base, which would indicate that if Mauricio receives everyday at-bats then it would likely come at the hot corner. It's certainly a position battle to keep a close eye on during spring training.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: To see action at 3B in winter ball

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said Wednesday that Mauricio will play some third base in the Dominican Winter League, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Mauricio made his major-league debut at second base this past season and that is probably going to be his long-term position in Queens, but the Mets want him to continue building his defensive versatility as he participates in winter ball for the third year in a row. The talented young infielder could maybe step in at the hot corner next season if Brett Baty is unable to take a significant step forward. Mark Vientos is also an option at third, though he profiles as more of a first baseman or DH moving forward.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Returns to lineup

Mauricio (illness) is starting at third base and batting sixth Friday versus the Reds in his return to the lineup, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Mauricio has sat out the last two days with an illness but is feeling well enough to give it a go for the series opener against Cincinnati. This is the first major-league start at third base for the rookie, and he could see more action there if Brett Baty's groin injury lingers.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Out again with illness

Mauricio (illness) remains out of the lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports. He should be available off the bench, however, after fully sitting out of the Mets' win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday. Mauricio, 22, has batted .306/.342/.444 with one homer and four steals through 10 major-league games since his Sept. 1 call-up.

Mauricio went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in a loss to the Nationals on Wednesday. Mauricio extended his hitting streak to five games to begin his career with a second-inning single, which he promptly followed with a stolen base. The rookie added another single in the sixth for his third multi-hit performance. Mauricio has yet go deep in the majors, but he's otherwise been impressive with a .421/.421/.474 slash line and three thefts through 19 plate appearances.

Mauricio went 2-for-4 with his first career stolen base in Saturday's loss to the Mariners. Mauricio followed up his impressive MLB debut with his second consecutive two-hit performance and stole a base while operating out of the nine-hole. The 22-year-old switch-hitting infielder showcased an impressive combination of power and speed in the minors, posting at least 20 home runs and 20 steals in each of the last two seasons. Mauricio is expected to be the Mets' primary second baseman down the stretch.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Possible waiver wire pickups

It looked like Mauricio might have an "in" with the Mets as far back as June, but better late than never, right? The details of his promotion are hush-hush, other than that it's happening Friday, but given that the Mets have made a big show of packing it in for 2023, it seems like a true audition for 2024. He's gotten plenty of exposure to both left field and second base this year, so he and Jeff McNeil figure to share those spots in some form or fashion. Mauricio isn't a disciplined hitter, but his contact is of a particularly high quality (91 mph average exit velocity and 116 mph max exit velocity) and he's made a lot more of it this year. He's also arriving hot, having hit .316 (24 for 76) with six homers in his past 18 games. His sort of upside is worth keeping close in case he makes good on it right away.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Promotion imminent

The Mets will call Mauricio up from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. The 22-year-old infielder is having the best statistical season of his career in Triple-A this year, slashing .295/.349/.511 with 23 homers, 71 RBI and 24 stolen bases. With Francisco Lindor locked in as New York's everyday shortstop, Mauricio will likely take over as the Mets' primary third baseman -- replacing the struggling Mark Vientos -- while making an occasional start at second base or in left field.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Set for work at third base

The Mets are planning to begin a rotation with Mauricio at Triple-A Syracuse in which he will play second base, shortstop and third base, probably twice a week at each position, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Mauricio has made 41 starts at second, 26 in left field and 25 at shortstop so far this season, but he has yet to appear at third base. He will soon get reps at the hot corner as the Mets move him away from outfield duties and get him familiar at a position of need at the major-league level. Overall, the 22-year-old is batting .289/.338/.479 with 16 homers and 19 steals in 97 games with Syracuse this season.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Bone bruise in ankle

Mauricio is considered day-to-day at Triple-A Syracuse after an MRI showed a bone bruise in his left ankle, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The bone bruise stems from a collision at second base back on June 4 and Mauricio will probably be rested until he is fully pain-free. Ultimately, it's a relatively encouraging diagnosis given there is no structural damage. The 22-year-old top infield prospect has been pushing toward his MLB debut while delivering a robust .320/.360/.524 batting line with eight home runs, 35 RBI, nine stolen bases and 38 runs scored through 60 games this season in the International League.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Optioned to Triple-A Syracuse

Mauricio was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse by the Mets on Saturday. Mauricio showed impressive power in his time in camp with the Mets with four home runs and a .636 slugging percentage over 35 plate appearances. He also hit .242 with a .286 on-base percentage, which shows there's still work to be done for the 21-year-old infielder. He'll begin the year in Syracuse and could be an option for the Mets if there's a need up the middle in the infield.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Shows off power for Rumble Ponies

Mauricio went 2-for-4 with a walk and two solo home runs for Double-A Binghamton on Thursday, The 21-year-old returned to the starting lineup July 13 after recovering from a minor hand injury and has gone 10-for-43 (.233) with two doubles and three homers in 10 games. Mauricio's approach at the plate still needs some refinement -- he's posted career highs with a 44.0 percent flyball rate and 50.0 percent pull rate, leading to a lopsided .248/.285/.483 slash line through 80 games this year for Binghamton -- but his 24.5 percent strikeout rate is acceptable, and his 18 homers and 11 steals highlight his potential if he can learn to make more consistent quality contact.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Awarded for High-A performance

Mauricio was named the High-A East's Top MLB Prospect and also made the circuit's All-Star squad. A .242/.290/.449 batting line isn't much to write home about, but it's good for a 20-year-old in High-A ball, and he showed noteworthy grit by working his way out of a lengthy early-season slump that lasted from late May to mid-July. He also didn't look daunted after getting promoted to Double-A, batting .323/.364/.452 across eight games there to close out the campaign. Expect Mauricio to open next season in Double-A, where he'll be expected to continue working on trimming his strikeout rate while getting to his power consistently in game action.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Homers twice in High-A

Mauricio went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo homers, a walk and three runs in High-A Brooklyn's win over Jersey Shore on Tuesday. After a difficult June in which the 20-year-old shortstop hit just .202, he's in the midst of an excellent July that's seen him bat .293 with five homers, two steals, 14 RBI and 11 runs across 19 games. Mauricio's season line -- .247/.289/.459 with 13 homers and six steals -- still leaves something to be desired, but he's made positive strides nonetheless, showing increased power and more than holding his own despite being three years younger than the average player in the High-A East. He's still raw, as he simply doesn't have a ton of minor-league experience and his plate discipline remains a work in progress, so the Mets would do well to give him plenty of development time.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Joins player pool

Mauricio was added to the Mets' 60-man player pool Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Although he wasn't with the team during spring training or summer camp, Mauricio will develop at the Mets' alternate training site among other top prospects. The shortstop is the No. 1 fantasy prospect in the Mets' system but shouldn't reach the majors during the abbreviated 2020 season. In 116 games with Low-A Columbia last season, the 19-year-old hit .268 with four home runs, 37 RBI and 99 strikeouts.
