  • Anibal Sanchez: Announces retirement from baseball

Sanchez has announced his retirement from baseball via his Instagram page. Sanchez finishes his 16-year MLB career with a career record of 116-119 with a 4.06 ERA while spending time with the Marlins, Tigers, Nationals and Atlanta. The right-hander finished fourth in Cy Young voting in 2013, when he registered a 2.57 ERA and 202:54 K:BB over 182 innings while helping Detroit reach the ALCS.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Earns fourth win

Sanchez (4-6) earned the win Saturday, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings in a 13-4 victory over the Phillies. He struck out six. Sanchez gave up a leadoff triple to Kyle Schwarber to begin the first inning and the latter would come around to score after stealing home later in the inning. Sanchez then went on to retire nine of the next 11 batters he faced before J.T. Realmuto kicked off a three-run inning with a leadoff double in the fourth. Sanchez had gone eight straight starts without allowing more than three runs coming into Saturday and has now won four of his last five decisions.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Five scoreless in win

Sanchez (3-6) earned the victory Sunday in Miami, striking out four in five shutout innings while allowing two hits and two walks. Sanchez was effective but not necessarily efficient in Sunday's ballgame as he needed 95 pitches to complete the five frames. Miami never really threatened, and only one baserunner made it into scoring position. The 38-year-old has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last seven starts, dropping his season ERA from 7.20 to 4.06 and compiling a 1.31 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 20:16 K:BB in 34.1 innings in that span. His next and possibly final start of the season will likely be next weekend against Philadelphia.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Coughs up two runs in loss

Sanchez (2-6) yielded two runs on four hits and two walks over six innings, striking out three and taking a loss against the Marlins on Sunday. Sanchez allowed an RBI single to Bryan De La Cruz in the second inning followed by Garrett Cooper's solo shot in the sixth. The veteran righty has given up two or fewer runs in six straight outings, posting an impressive 1.53 ERA during that stretch. On the year, Sanchez is sporting a 4.40 ERA with a 38:28 K:BB through 12 starts. He's expected to take the mound in Miami next week.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Yields one run in short outing

Sanchez allowed one run on two hits and a walk over two innings against Philadelphia on Sunday. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. Sanchez threw just 24 of 46 pitches for strikes before his outing was ended by a lengthy rain delay. He's given up just three runs over his last 23.1 frames, lowering his season ERA to 4.56 through 11 starts. Sanchez had won his previous two starts, and he hasn't taken a loss since Aug. 8.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Earns second straight win

Sanchez (2-5) allowed two hits and two walks over five shutout frames Monday, striking out three and picking up a win over St. Louis. Sanchez scattered a pair of walks and two singles during his scoreless start. After starting the year 0-5 with a 7.56 ERA through his first five starts, the veteran righty is 2-0 with a terrific 1.71 ERA over his last five outings. He's now sporting a 35:23 K:BB with a 4.56 ERA across 51.51 frames. Sanchez is lined up to start in Philadelphia this weekend.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Finally in win column

Sanchez (1-5) picked up the win in Wednesday's 5-1 victory over the A's, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out four. The veteran right-hander put together his best outing of the year as he lasted at least six innings for the first time in nine starts. Sanchez wasn't particularly sharp, tossing 57 of 95 pitches for strikes, but he kept Oakland's hitters off-balance and didn't give up an extra-base hit. Over his last four starts, Sanchez has put together a 2.11 ERA and 1.03 WHIP despite a mediocre 14:10 K:BB through 21.1 innings.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Remains winless after sharp outing

Sanchez didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Mariners, giving up two hits and two walks over 4.1 scoreless innings while striking out two. The 38-year-old needed 81 pitches (46 strikes) to record 13 outs, but he kept Seattle off the board while he was on the mound, even if he couldn't last long enough to qualify for his first win of the year. Sanchez has dropped his ERA from 7.56 to 5.72 over his last three starts, but his 28:18 K:BB through 39.1 innings on the season and his inability to provide much length put a firm ceiling on his fantasy value, even when he is pitching well.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Allows only one hit in no-decision

Sanchez pitched five innings against San Diego on Thursday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks. He struck out four batters and did not factor in the decision. Sanchez registered easily his best start of the season, surrendering just one hit -- a fourth-inning Manny Machado solo homer. The right-hander still doesn't have a start this season in which he hasn't surrendered a long ball or given up fewer than two walks, but Sanchez didn't let those mistakes destroy him in this outing. It's been a rough campaign for the veteran -- he's still sporting an ugly 6.43 ERA -- but he's at least been able to chew up some innings, going five or more frames in six of his seven appearances. Sanchez's performance Thursday isn't likely to turn his season around (or lead to any fantasy appeal), but it ranks as a bright spot in what has been an otherwise forgettable 16th big-league campaign.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Goes five innings in no-decision

Sanchez allowed three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four batters over five innings in a no-decision against San Diego on Saturday. Sanchez wasn't sharp in the outing, as he threw only 57 of 98 pitches for strikes and tied a season high with three walks. He served up multiple homers for the fourth time in six starts but also tied his best mark this season by giving up three runs. Sanchez has yet to pick up a victory, but he did avoid taking his sixth straight loss. The veteran simply hasn't pitched well in his 16th major-league campaign, posting a 7.20 ERA and 1.60 WHIP over six starts.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Remains winless

Sanchez (0-5) took the loss Monday as the Nationals were downed 6-3 by the Cubs, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks over five-plus innings. He struck out three. The 38-year-old served up homers to Nelson Velazquez and Christopher Morel, two kids nearly half his age, in the third inning and the Nats were never able to climb out of the hole. Sanchez tossed 56 of 91 pitches for strikes before exiting, and he's managed to get saddled with the loss in all five of his big-league starts this season.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Struggles in loss

Sanchez (0-4) took the loss against the Mets on Wednesday, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits while striking out two and walking three over 4.1 innings. It was a rough outing for Sanchez, who threw 62 of 97 pitches for strikes and allowed four earned runs across 4.1 frames. He allowed a solo homer to Pete Alonso in the third inning, then was pulled after loading the bases in the fifth. Daniel Vogelbach ended up hitting a grand slam off Sanchez's replacement, adding three earned runs to his line. The veteran righty has yet to allow fewer than three earned runs in his four appearances and has taken the loss in each game. His ERA sits at 7.65.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Saddled with third loss

Sanchez (0-3) yielded six runs on six hits and two walks over 5.2 innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Cardinals. Sanchez coughed up three runs through five frames (all coming in the third inning) before allowing back-to-back home runs to Nolan Gorman and Lars Nootbaar in the sixth. The veteran righty has now been tagged with a loss in each of his three starts this season, posting a 7.47 ERA and 13:6 K:BB in the process. Sanchez is currently lined up to face the Mets at home next week.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Handed second loss

Sanchez (0-2) took the loss during Saturday's 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. Making his second start of the campaign, Sanchez loaded the bases in the first inning but escaped with just one run scoring and permitted additional runs in the second in the fourth. The 38-year-old struggled a bit with control as only 54 of 93 pitches went for strikes and he's walked two batters in both his starts. Through 10 innings, Sanchez has surrendered seven runs and 14 baserunners with nine strikeouts. He lines up to take the hill again at home against St. Louis next weekend.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Remains in rotation following break

Sanchez will start Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. Sanchez made his season debut July 14 against Atlanta, working five innings while giving up four earned runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five in a losing effort. Though he wasn't overly impressive in his first MLB outing since the 2020 campaign, the 38-year-old right-hander should get an extended look in the Washington rotation nonetheless, given the dearth of appealing alternatives in the organization. Sanchez likely only warrants attention in NL-only formats at this time.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Five innings in return

Sanchez (0-1) took the loss Thursday against Atlanta, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five in five innings. Sanchez got off to a rough start, walking Ronald Acuna and giving up a two-run homer to Dansby Swanson before recording an out. He then settled down and retired 11 of the next 12 batters he faced. The veteran righty gave up a another two-run shot with two outs in the fifth inning, this time to rookie Michael Harris. Thursday's start was Sanchez's first appearance since 2020 after sitting out 2021 and suffering a neck injury before debuting this year. He'll will presumably continue in Washington's rotation following the Midsummer Classic.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Activated for Thursday's start

Sanchez (neck) was activated from the 60-day injured list ahead of his start against Atlanta on Thursday. The veteran right-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since late 2020, but he'll make his 2022 debut Thursday after missing most of the season's first half with a neck injury. Sanchez made four rehab starts in the minors and allowed one earned run over 5.1 frames in his last outing, so he shouldn't have any significant workload restrictions in his first start for the Nationals.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Entering rotation Thursday

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Sanchez (neck) will be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Thursday's game against Atlanta in Washington, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Sanchez's upcoming appearance will be his first in the big leagues since Sept. 26, 2020, after he chose not to sign with a team in the 2021 season and was then sidelined for the first three months of the current campaign while recovering from a cervical neck impingement. The 38-year-old right-hander recently wrapped up a four-start rehab assignment by covering 5.1 innings for Triple-A Rochester on Friday, so he shouldn't face any major restrictions from a workload standpoint as he slots into the Washington rotation. Even so, Sanchez won't make for a comfortable streaming option after he turned in a 6.62 ERA in 53 innings during his last stint in the majors with the Nationals two years ago.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Another rehab outing on tap

Sanchez (neck) is scheduled to make his fourth rehab start Friday with Triple-A Rochester, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Sanchez covered 4.2 innings during his third rehab outing Sunday, and he'll take the mound again Friday with Rochester. The veteran right-hander has yet to pitch for the Nationals this season after being diagnosed with a cervical impingement in his neck April 11, but he appears to be closing in on his return from the injured list.

  • Nationals' Anibal Sanchez: Reaches 60-pitch mark in rehab

Sanchez (neck) struck out three over 2.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks Tuesday in his rehab start for Triple-A Rochester. Sanchez didn't show much control during his second rehab outing, but Nationals manager Dave Martinez told Jessica Camerato of MLB.com that the right-hander's effectiveness was hindered by the sun covering the strike zone for much of the day. He still managed to build up to 61 pitches in the start, so he may require only one or two more tune-up outings in the minors before becoming an option for the big-league rotation. Sanchez has been on the injured list all season due to a cervical neck impingement.
