Editor’s Note: Every week we will release the Top 150 players based on their projections for that scoring period. Use this list to compare players and help make those really tough decisions.
The Trail Blazers’ decision to trade away Mason Plumlee wasn’t a tank move necessarily, but it was clearly a move made with an eye beyond just the spring of 2017. The Blazers’ decision to go all-in on last year’s surprisingly competitive roster yielded fewer returns than expected and, with Plumlee heading for free agency this season, investing in another solid player who isn’t a difference maker just wasn’t in the cards.
Of course, it wasn’t just a straight salary dump because the Blazers received a first-round pick from the Nuggets and, perhaps most importantly, young center Jusuf Nurkic. Deemed expendable by the Nuggets with Nikola Jokic making the leap to superstardom, the Blazers opted to take a chance on Nurkic. So far, that has looked like the best investment they’ve made in years.
We’re only five games into the Nurkic Era in Portland, but he’s taken to the city like a flannel-clad hipster riding a fixed-gear bicycle. Nurkic made all five of his shots in 21 minutes off the bench in his Blazers debut, and has just kept rolling from there, averaging 14.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 3.6 combined blocks and steals per game with the Blazers, while playing 30 minutes per game.
The loss of Plumlee was supposed to have left a playmaking void at the pivot for the Blazers, especially with Nurkic having only shown intermittent flashes of high-level passing ability during his inconsistent time with the Nuggets. However, Nurkic has more than held his own in this regard, nearly doubling his assist rate since getting to the Blazers, to 20.4 percent.
These don’t seem to just be empty numbers, either, as the Blazers have a net rating of 19.1 with Nurkic on the floor, despite being outscored overall over the last five games. That might overstate things just a bit -- it might be more of an indictment on the quality of the team’s backups -- but all signs point to Nurkic being a clear difference maker thus far.
He fits well with Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum, thanks to his bruising screens and the space they create. Lillard has a 60.6 True Shooting percentage with Nurkic on the floor, while McCollum’s is at an even more insane 66.0 percent. Even with standard caveats regarding sample size, that’s a very good sign if you’re at all leery about trusting Nurkic’s play so far. Fitting with the franchise cornerstones is going to be the most important thing, and all signs indicate Nurkic fits like a glove.
We have, of course, seen solid stretches from Nurkic in the past, most notably as a rookie, when he forced his way into the starting lineup by averaging 12.5-7.7-1.2-1.3-3.2 over a six-game stretch in just 22.8 minutes, so there’s a chance this is just another flash in the pan. However, given the Blazers’ other options -- or lack thereof -- this is the first time in Nurkic’s career he has nothing blocking his path to Fantasy relevance.
Nurkic sure looks like a must-start Fantasy option right now, and that is already a huge win for those of you who picked him up off waivers. It looks like an even bigger win in light of a very favorable schedule in Week 20 (March 6-12), which sees the Blazers play five times. This is going to work out better for you than it has for the Blazers, which is saying something.
