Week 8 Waiver Wire: Smart, Noel?

Editor's Note: Every week, we will release the Top 150 players based on their projections for that scoring period. Use this list to compare players and help make those really tough decisions.

We talk about the schedule a lot in this space every week, and for good reason.

Unlike in, say, Fantasy football, where matchups are everything, we aren't that interested in matchups in hoops. They're a nice tiebreaker, but they probably shouldn't decide much in any given week for you. In Fantasy hoops, it's not the quality of the games, it's the quantity that matters.

And that's where the Timberwolves lose in Week 8 (Dec. 12-18). They actually have solid matchups this week, but play just two times, which is enough to torpedo their collevtive Fantasy value. The Timberwolves have five players started in at least 50 percent of CBSSports.com leagues, and their owners are going to have some awfully tough decisions to make this week.

Let's dive into them.

Karl-Anthony Towns

There are undoubtedly some Fantasy owners disappointed in in Karl-Anthony Towns this season, which is a testament to just how high expectations were coming into the season. Towns has been an easy top-20 player, with solid production across the board, however some Fantasy players were looking at him as a No. 1 overall pick, and he just hasn't been quite that good.

Still, he's been plenty good enough to be a must-start player every week, and that should continue to hold true in Week 8. Even with just two games on the schedule, he does enough to be worth starting in all formats. However, he ranks just 95th in projected Fantasy points for the week, and will likely come in around there in Rotisserie scoring for the week. You'll want to keep him in your lineup for sure, but you're looking at closer to low-end value.

Some players I would start over Towns: Pau Gasol (4 games), Dwight Howard (3 games), Mason Plumlee (4 games)

Andrew Wiggins

Andrew Wiggins has taken a few more small steps forward this season, extending his range out behind the 3-point line for the first time consistently, while showing off more play-making chops, with a slight uptick in his assist rate for the third season in a row.

However, despite s0me gaudy scoring totals, he remains a pretty limited Fantasy player. In H2H scoring leagues, his ability to score in high volume keeps him as a solid Fantasy option more weeks than not, but he is a pretty middling option in those category-based formats. He doesn't get enough 3-pointers or assists to bump up his Fantasy value, and he is even worse when it comes to the defensive numbers. Wiggins is safe to pass on in Week 8.

Some players I would start over Wiggins: Marcus Morris (3 games), Maurice Harkless (4 games), Tony Allen (4 games)

Zach LaVine

Zach LaVine has never had the hype either Towns or Wiggins did, but he's turned himself into quite a fine Fantasy option in his two-plus seasons in the league. He plays huge minutes for the Timberwolves, and is one of their three 20-PPG scores, putting up 20.2 per game, with 2.5 3-pointers and 2.9 assists. He actually edges out Wiggins in both scoring formats, even if he doesn't have quite the reputation Wiggins does. He is easier to start in Roto here, especially if you can't afford to lose his 3-point shooting, but even that doesn't count for much in a league where 3-point shooting isn't hard to come by.

Some players I would start over LaVine: Marcus Smart (3 games), D.J. Augustin (4 games), Patty Mills (3 games)

Gorgui Dieng
MEM • PF • 14

The Wolves have continued to rely on their twin towers lineup, with Dieng and Towns showing broad enough skills to play together even in a league landscape that is shifting away from big men. Dieng is an underrated Fantasy option because he doesn't necessarily dominate any one category; he just fills up the box score, challenging for double-doubles and adding solid defense and assist numbers for a big man.

However, the same thing that makes him underrated for Fantasy makes him easy to sit this week becaucse the volume just isn't there.

Some players I would start over Dieng: Greg Monroe (3 games), Robin Lopez (3 games), Timofey Mozgov (4 games)

Ricky Rubio

There was a time when, even with his obvious flaws, you could get away with starting Ricky Rubio even in a two-game week. He was such a productive passer and defender that you couldn't afford to lose out on those steals and assists. That was the past, and Rubio just isn't that guy anymore. He's not even a must-start option in a normal week at this point.

Some players I would start over Rubio: Toney Douglas (4 games), Langston Galloway (4 games), Jameer Nelson (3 games)
