Editor's Note: Every week, we will release the Top 150 players based on their projections for that scoring period. Use this list to compare players and help make those really tough decisions.
With every game Joel Embiid plays, the 76ers' future looks brighter and brighter. The two years he missed with recurring foot issues set the franchise's timeline back, but just a month and a half into his career, and it's become abundantly clear he was well worth the patience through every setback.
However, because nothing can be easy with this franchise, even Embiid's emergence as a burgeoning superstar hasn't been without its own issues. Embiid clearly needs and deserves as many minutes and shots as he can handle, but the 76ers also have a couple of quite talented young big men beyond Embiid in Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel, and that makes this a tough situation for Fantasy players to deal with.
It actually won't be much of an issue in Week 9 (Dec. 19-25) because you can pretty safely sit everyone in Philadelphia, with only two games on the schedule. Moving forward, however, this is going to be an issue f0r the 76ers' big men, all of whom can be Fantasy contributors in the right roles. The question Fantasy players need to answer right now is, can they find the right roles in Philadelphia?
Noel doesn't seem to think so. Even with Okafor and Embiid playing together for stretches, Noel played just eight minutes in the team's most recent game, and he didn't mince his words when expressing his displeasure with his role afterwards: "I think I'm too good to be playing eight minutes. That's crazy. Need to figure this s--- out."
That isn't a great sign, especially with Noel owned in 82 percent of CBSSports.com leagues. However, just because it is Noel getting the short end of the minutes stick right now, that doesn't mean it will be this way forever. Embiid's role seems pretty secure, but Okafor isn't guaranteed anything at this point.
These are three talented big men who can all make an impact for Fantasy, but it's hard for all of them to do so at once. You won't be able to use them in Week 9, but the status of these three big men is going to be a key for Fantasy players moving forward. Let's look at the outlook for all three at this point.
Embiid is the obvious star, and the only one here who isn't dependent on anyone else's minutes for his production. The 76ers haven't been quite so single-minded when it comes to getting him the ball and his shots as of late, but he still sports a 35.6 usage rate for the season as a whole. The only thing that can slow Embiid down is his minutes restriction -- up to 28 per game lately! -- and the risk of injury. You can't control either, and Embiid is too good to worry about. You just have to hope everything works out.
Okafor is, all other things being equal, the least interesting of this trio for Fantasy. He is an old-school points-and-rebounds center, except he also isn't a particularly strong rebounder. However, all things aren't equal right now, as he has been playing more minutes than Embiid of late, and is averaging 14.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game over the last eight games.
He is getting 26.9 minutes per game in that stretch, and as long as he remains in that role, Okafor is a useful Fantasy option, albeit a low-end one given his lack of secondary skills. However, he also might be someone who is more valuable in name value than Fantasy value, and given the questions about his minutes moving forward, it might be tough to rely on him in the long run.
Noel is the player who has by far the biggest gap between his current value and his potential value. We've seen him be a top-10 center in Fantasy before, but knee issues and the glut of big men have kept him from living up to that potential so far this season. He is the exact opposite sort of player from Okafor, who gets most of his value from his ability to score in isolation, while Noel's ability to hit the boards, score efficiently and rack up defensive numbers is what makes him so valuable.
Noel isn't ready to make an impact, and that's a frustrating situation for Fantasy players, but there aren't many big men who can fill up the box score quite so efficiently. As tough as it is to keep stomaching his poor production on your bench, you just can't find guys with his kind of upside on waivers, which is why you have to keep stashing him
