McLaughlin had eight points (3-9 FG, 2-3 3Pt), six assists and four rebounds in Sunday's loss to the Knicks. The bad news is Minnesota took another loss and fired its head coach, but the good news is McLaughlin continues to be quietly productive as the backup to Ricky Rubio with D'Angelo Russell (knee) sidelined. While he broke a streak of five straight games with at least one steal, McLaughlin now has at least six assists in six of his last eight contests.
McLaughlin tallied 11 points (5-8 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 1-1 FT) and seven assists across 22 minutes in a loss to the Raptors on Friday. Ricky Rubio again got the start at point guard, but McLaughlin played only four fewer minutes and easily outplayed the veteran, leading Minnesota with seven assists and converting five of his eight field-goal attempts. McLaughlin has now collected exactly seven dimes in three of his past five contests and is averaging 4.8 assists along with 5.6 points and 1.0 steal in 18 games this season.
McLaughlin scored six points (2-4 FG, 2-2 FT) and added four assists, three rebounds, two steals and one block across 19 minutes Sunday in the Timberwolves' 116-112 win over the Raptors. McLaughlin was expected to spent all of February at the G League bubble in Orlando, but the injury to D'Angelo Russell (leg) prompted the Timberwolves to recall him. The 24-year-old has proceeded to step in as the backup point guard behind Ricky Rubio, and he's done a solid job of conducting the second unit. He's received no fewer than 19 minutes in each of the last three games, averaging 4.7 points, 5.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals. So long as at least Rubio is healthy, McLaughlin won't be worth a pickup outside of the deepest of league, but he could have some short-term appeal as a DFS punt play so long as Russell is out.
McLaughlin will join the Iowa Wolves for the 2020-21 G League season in Orlando. McLaughlin had been carving out a fairly significant backup role with the Timberwolves recently, but he'll now shift his focus toward preparing for the four-week bubble in Orlando. Over 11 games with the parent club this year, McLaughlin is averaging 5.5 points and 4.1 assists over 17.2 minutes per contest.
McLaughlin tallied 15 points (7-12 FG, 1-2 3Pt), five assists, two rebounds and one steal in 22 minutes off the bench Monday in the Timberwolves' 130-108 loss to the Warriors. With D'Angelo Russell (quadriceps) missing his second game in a row, Ricky Rubio moved up to the starting five, allowing McLaughlin to stay in the rotation as the backup point guard. Due to the blowout nature of the contest, the second unit received some extra run, and McLaughlin was able to churn out a useful all-around line. With career averages of 7.3 points, 4.2 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 steals in 19.2 minutes, McLaughlin has shown the ability to produce effectively when given playing time, but the opportunity likely won't be there for him when Russell is back in action.
