Payton was selected by Raptors 905 with the No. 15 overall pick in Monday's G League Draft. Payton appeared in 29 contests for the Wizards a season ago, putting up 3.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 14.9 minutes per game. He'll start the 2020 campaign in the G League but has shown in the past that he's capable of playing off the bench in the NBA.
Payton tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday and did not travel with the Wizards to Orlando, Ava Wallace of The Washington Post reports. Payton appeared in 29 games with the Wizards before the suspension of the season, averaging 14.9 minutes, 3.9 points and 2.8 rebounds. He will now be required to self-quarantine for 14 days and produce two negative tests before entering the bubble.
Payton was recalled from the G League on Wednesday. Payton's playing time has been inconsistent as of late at the NBA level. Over the Wizards' past 13 games, he's played in just eight, averaging 1.5 points in 3.5 minutes.
The Wizards assigned Payton to the G League's Capital City Go-Go on Tuesday. Wizards teammates Anzejs Pasecniks and Admiral Schofield will join Payton in the G League, as all three players are scheduled to suit up for Capital City in Tuesday's matchup with the Maine Red Claws. Expect Payton to be recalled ahead of Wednesday's matchup with the Nets, though he likely won't find himself in coach Scott Brooks' rotation for that contest.
Payton was recalled from the G League on Sunday. Payton didn't see the court Friday against the Mavericks after being moved out of the starting lineup and was subsequently assigned to the Capital City Go-Go, where he put up 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in Saturday's game against the Erie Bayhawks. The 27-year-old is averaging 4.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.5 steals in 19.8 minutes in 21 NBA games this season.
