Bonga was recalled from the G League on Thursday. Bonga has played 12 games with the South Bay Lakers, averaging 14.0 points and 6.3 rebounds as a 19-year-old rookie. Assuming he doesn't get send back down before Friday's game against the Spurs, he'll have a chance to make his NBA debut, though Bonga isn't expected to play a significant role for the Los Angeles this season.
Bonga (ankle) scored nine points (4-8 FG, 1-4 3Pt) and tallied eight rebounds along with six assists in the win Wednesday over the Legends. A sprained ankle prevented Bonga from playing in the previous two games, but the forward made his return to the court Wednesday, playing 31 minutes and finishing with a plus-18.
Bonga (ankle) did not play in Saturday's game against the Skyforce. Bonga has missed the previous the two games with an ankle injury as a number of South Bay players were held out due to injury. Bonga will try to make his return to the court Wednesday against the Legends.
Bonga suffered a sprained left ankle during Tuesday's game against the Agua Caliente Clippers and had to be helped off the court, Adam Johnson of 2Ways10Days.com reports. Bonga will not return to Tuesday's contest. More information on the extent of his injury and a timetable for a return may emerge in the coming days.
Lakers assistant general manager Jesse Buss noted earlier in August that Bonga will play for the organization's G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers, during the upcoming season, Mike Trudell of the Lakers' official site reports. The Lakers acquired Bonga, the 39th overall pick by the 76ers during the June draft, with the knowledge that the German point guard would likely be a long-term project. The 18-year-old was the youngest player to suit up in the Las Vegas Summer League and unsurprisingly saw limited minutes with the Lakers prioritizing playing time for those who are closer to making a tangible impact at the NBA level. Bonga should benefit from playing regularly at South Bay under the watchful eye of the organization in 2018-19, and if he makes a strong impression in the G League, he could sign with the Lakers next summer and make his NBA debut in 2019-20.
