Howard agreed Monday to a contract with the Lakers, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. This deal marks Howard's third separate stint with the Lakers, most recently spending last season with the 76ers. Two years ago with Los Angeles, he averaged 7.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks while shooting 72.9 percent from the field in 18.9 minutes. He should occupy a similar role in 2021-22, though at 35 years old, the miles may start to catch up with him sooner than later.
Howard will start Sunday's game against the Magic, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. The Sixers are resting several regulars, including Joel Embiid, so Howard will get the nod at center. Expect the veteran to see an uptick in minutes as Philadelphia closes out the regular season and looks ahead to the playoffs.
Howard has been suspended for Friday's game against the Magic for accruing 16 technical fouls this season, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. The 36-year-old received his 16th technical foul during Thursday's loss to the Heat, resulting in the one-game ban. Howard would be suspended an additional game for every two technicals he receives the rest of the way, but that's not a major concern with only one game remaining after Friday. Mike Scott should see more work as a reserve behind Joel Embiid for Philadelphia.
Howard produced 19 points (6-9 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 6-8 FT), 14 rebounds and an assist across 22 minutes in Saturday's 118-104 win over the Pistons. It was a game of distinction for Howard, who moved into 11th place on the NBA's career rebounding list. We should see increased run from the veteran as the regular season draws to a close, as coach Doc Rivers will likely elect to rest Joel Embiid for the postseason.
Howard recorded 14 points (5-11 FG, 4-4 FT), 11 rebounds, three blocks and an assist across 18 minutes off the bench in Sunday's overtime win over the Spurs. Howard is arguably going through his most productive stretch of the season, as he has posted back-to-back double-doubles just for the second time this season -- though he didn't play more than 18 minutes in any of those games. The veteran big man actually has three double-doubles over his last five outings and is averaging 11.4 points with 9.4 rebounds across 17.8 minutes per game over that five-game span.
