Emeka Okafor: Let go by 76ers

Emeka Okafor's NBA comeback attempt has hit a snag, as the 76ers opted to waive the veteran big man Saturday, Tom Moore of the Bucks County Courier Times reports. The distant cousin of now former teammate Jahlil Okafor had not appeared in an NBA game since the 2012-13 seaason. The 34-year-old Okafor figured to have a long shot at landing on the team's final roster, but it offered a feel-good story for training camp. He recorded 17 points and 16 rebounds in six exhibition games. While he is unlikely to find a new landing spot, he could be called upon if a team is looking for veteran big man leadership.

Emeka Okafor: Inks camp deal with Philadelphia

Emeka Okafor signed Monday with the 76ers on a non-guaranteed contract.Okafor, a distant cousin of 76ers big man Jahlil Okafor, will attempt an NBA comeback despite having not appeared in a game since the 2012-13 campaign, when he averaged 9.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game with the Wizards. A herniated disc in his neck has prevented Okafor from playing anywhere the last four seasons, but the 34-year-old apparently received a clean bill of health from the 76ers' doctors. Since he's just joining Philadelphia on a camp deal, Okafor faces long odds of winning a spot on the 76ers' 15-man roster, but if he shows in preseason action that he's still a capable anchor on the defensive end, he could generate interest from other teams if he ends up being waived.

Emeka Okafor: Plans to make NBA comeback

Emeka Okafor is going to attempt a comeback for the 2017-18 NBA season, Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press reports.Okafor's last stint in the league was with the Wizards during the 2012-13 season, where he ended up with averages of 9.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 block across 26.0 minutes. He went on to suffer a herniated disc in his neck the following year and has been working on a comeback ever since. Okafor is reportedly at full strength and going through individual workouts, so he could get a look from a team in need of a veteran big man. He's going to turn 35 in September, but according to Krawczynski, he's already been in talks with teams around the league. It will be a situation to monitor over the summer, but he'll ultimately have to pass a physical and have a strong showing in training camp to make a regular-season roster.

    Emeka Okafor: Pursuing NBA comeback

Emeka Okafor's agent, Jeff Schwartz, confirmed Monday that the center hopes to return to the NBA in December or January, ESPN.com's Jackie MacMullan reports.Okafor, who will turn 34 in September, last appeared in the league during the 2012-13 season with the Wizards, averaging 9.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 block across 26.0 minutes per game. After being traded to the Suns prior to the following season, Okafor went on to miss the entire year while recovering from a herniated disc in his neck. Schwartz said that Okafor has been training for a comeback and has improved his conditioning, but is probably "five or six months away" from being ready to play again. With three seasons away from the game, it's uncertain if Okafor can reemerge as the solid defensive presence he was prior to succumbing to the neck injury. Okafor said he's only interested in returning to a contending team, so his market could be limited once he decides to work out for NBA suitors.
