Hyde (knee) could face competition from Joe Williams for the starting job, CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco reports.

A holdover from the previous 49ers regime, Hyde produced 4.6 yards per carry last season to bring his career clip up to 4.3, but a trio of missed games leaves him with 14 absences through three years as he prepares for the final season of his rookie contract. With nothing to suggest the two sides are discussing an extension, the rebuilding 49ers could favor Williams -- who was drafted in the fourth round at No. 121 overall -- if he appears capable of matching or approaching Hyde's usual production. The 235-pound veteran has a clear advantage in terms of size and power, but Williams is still solidly built at 5-foot-10, 210 pounds -- and he ran a 4.41 40-yard dash at the Combine. Hyde should make a full recovery from last season's torn MCL before training camp.
