Chiefs' Trey Smith: Will be franchise tagged

The Chiefs plan to place the franchise tag on Smith this offseason, NFL.com reports.

Smith was expected to be the top guard available in free agency this offseason, but the Chiefs will instead retain a key to their offensive line. While the franchise tag will ensure Smith doesn't hit free agency, the team is still hoping to work out a long-term deal.
