Week 5 Rankings: Standard | PPR
Is now the time to put in a big offer for Rob Gronkowski, or is this the last week you'll have to deal him away and get something close to first-round value for him?
Watching Gronkowski play through the last two weeks, his value to the Patriots has come as a blocker, not a receiver. He has one catch on three targets. Was he blocking more to better protect rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett, or was he blocking because he can't run as aggressively as he has in the past?
Gronkowski started last week's game looking lethargic, almost Frankenstein-esque. But by the fourth quarter it looked like he was loose and started running fluidly. If his hamstring was an issue, he was not only willing to play through it but looked like himself by the second half.
So perhaps his blocking role was more about protecting the young quarterback than protecting himself. That's an issue he shouldn't have to deal with once Tom Brady is back under center.
Now's the time to keep Gronkowski if you've got him. If you don't have him, try to take advantage of his depressed value and get him in a trade -- especially if it's a win for you based on the Trade Values Chart.
Here are some trades being batted around on Twitter involving Gronk.
Rob Gronkowski for LeSean McCoy: Gronk has obvious upside, but Shady is running the ball as well as anyone in the game right now. No one in their right mind would rather have Gronkowski over McCoy at this point.
Rob Gronkowski for Will Fuller: This is a joke, right? Fuller has been fun, but he's not on the same level as Gronkowski. It's a panicked owner who is basically gifting Gronk in this deal.
Rob Gronkowski for Odell Beckham: No one would have considered this before the season, or after the first few games, but the frustration Fantasy owners have with Odell Beckham is understandable. It's an even deal -- you have to assume the best is yet to come for both players.
Rob Gronkowski for Todd Gurley: This is another near-even deal, but only in standard leagues. Like the Beckham swap, the best is yet to come for both guys. But there's no comparison when it comes to offenses and matchups ahead -- Gronkowski has Gurley beat there.
Rob Gronkowski and Doug Martin for DeMarco Murray: This is an interesting swap. A lot of folks think Murray is the ultimate sell-high candidate since he's gotten off to such an unexpected start. But Gronk's value isn't too far off from Murray's, and Martin should return to a pretty solid role once he's healthy. Plus the Buccaneers' schedule is pretty good after the bye. I would give up on Murray in a heartbeat.
Rob Gronkowski and Jamaal Charles for Julio Jones and Hunter Henry: You have to give up a lot to get Julio in a trade. This accomplishes it. With the values of Gronk and Charles depressed and not guaranteed to rebound, offering both for a sure thing in Jones makes sense.
What are the Trade Values? The chart is designed to help guide you in making fair trades in your standard-scoring or PPR leagues. The values assigned to the players below are a long-term measurement of their Fantasy value. By adding two players' values you could determine what one player you should be able to get in return. This list also works as a "Rest of Season" rankings. Also, any player not on the chart should be considered valued at no more than four points.
