Washington released Collins (foot) on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reprots.
As expected, Collins will head to free agency after the two sides were unable to agree to a restructured contract. After the recent acquisition of Carson Wentz, Washington needed to free up cap space before the new league year began Wednesday, and Collins' release saves the Commanders roughly $6.5 million. The 28-year-old, who transitioned to a hybrid linebacker/safety role in 2021, may have to settle for a one- or two-year deal on the open market.
