Penning sustained a toe injury during Friday's preseason matchup against the Chargers, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
Penning's foot was stepped on in the first quarter of Friday's matchup, and he was carted off the field shortly thereafter. While coach Dennis Allen didn't speculate on the severity of Penning's injury after the game, it seems as though the rookie or James Hurst (foot) will have a chance to suit up for the Saints' Week 1 matchup against Atlanta on Sept. 11.
