What do 12 touchdowns in two games do to a guy's trade value?
It's like a long-standing stock that has been at the same value for years suddenly taking off. Ben Roethlisberger has always been a quarterback Fantasy owners have known about, but back-to-back six-score games is grabbing a lot of attention.
Have we seen Roethlisberger get lucky or is he turning over a new leaf? Well, he's not really throwing that much more than he did in his previous seven games, nor is his completion percentage noticeably higher. But he does have a fresh threat in the passing game in Martavis Bryant, who has accounted for five scores in the last three games and four in Roethlisberger's last two. He's opened up everything for Roethlisberger and made coverage lighter on all of the Steelers' other targets not named Antonio Brown, who has already been whipping tight coverage week after week.
It's especially helped Roethlisberger that he's played his last two games at home against good defenses missing their top cornerbacks. Matchups matter, and that's an important factor to look at when figuring out Big Ben's future.
The Steelers remaining schedule: at the Jets, at the Titans, vs. the Saints, at the Bengals, at the Falcons, vs. the Chiefs in Week 16 and vs. the Bengals in Week 17. The Bengals and Chiefs rank strongly in Fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks but the rest of the group isn't bad at all. You have to figure that Roethlisberger won't keep up the crazy touchdown production, but two or three per game with solid yardage each week should be expected, especially given the schedule. He should finish as a Top 10 Fantasy quarterback from here on out.
As such, people are trading for Roethlisberger to solve their quarterback dilemmas. Let's see some actual trades made by Fantasy owners in CBSSports.com leagues.
Ben Roethlisberger for Jerick McKinnon: I might expect a lot of trades like this one -- Roethlisberger flipped for a start-worthy player that was originally picked up off waivers. The team that had McKinnon could afford to lose him for Roethlisberger. Of course it's a steal for the team giving up McKinnon since we just saw Matt Asiata vulture three touchdowns from the kid, but it doesn't make the trade overly "unfair."
Ben Roethlisberger for Alshon Jeffery: Roethlisberger's been good, but giving up Jeffery straight up for him is paying too much. Big Ben could continue to post 25 to 30 points per week, but he's at a position where mediocre players can post 20 points per week. Jeffery is slightly more valuable because of where he stacks up at the position he plays.
Ben Roethlisberger and Martavis Bryant for T.Y. Hilton and Christine Michael: This deal is pretty darn close to being right on target on the chart below. An owner is upgrading to Hilton by effectively selling high on the two Steelers. It's brilliant for them and potentially a season-saving move for the other owner too, assuming he needed to replace Nick Foles, Cam Newton or any other suspect quarterback.
Ben Roethlisberger and Greg Olsen for Jimmy Graham: On the chart this one's a little out of whack, but the concept makes sense: The squad upgrading for Graham is purposely overpaying with Olsen, who has been a great Fantasy tight end this season, and Roethlisberger, who might have been a backup behind someone like Aaron Rodgers. I would expect to see a lot of trades like this one.
Our Trade Value Chart is designed to help you in making fair trades in your standard-scoring or PPR league. The values assigned to the players below are a long-term measurement of their Fantasy value. By adding two players' values you could determine what one player you might be able to get in return. This list should also work as a "Rest of Season" Rankings.
