Player Outlook

Here's Demaryius Thomas' last six months: A trade-deadline deal; a wrist injury; a torn Achilles. Then he became a free agent, then a car accident led to an arrest, and finally, he signed with the Patriots. The 31-year-old Thomas will have to fully recover from his Achilles injury and earn a consistent spot in the lineup for the Patriots. Until that happens, Fantasy managers shouldn't bother drafting or rostering him.

  • Patriots' Demaryius Thomas: Contract terms clarified
    By RotoWire Staff

Thomas' (Achilles) one-year deal with the Patriots carries a salary cap hit of $2.9 million, Ryan Hannable of WEEI.com reports. Per the report, the veteran wideout landed a $150,000 signing bonus from the Patriots and is in line to earn a $150,000 bonus for reporting to the team to go with a $1.2 million base salary. Additionally, Thomas can collect $1.4 million in per-game roster bonuses, as well as another $750,000 for 60 catches, $750,000 for 800 receiving yards, $750,000 for 1,000 yards and $750,000 for 1,200 yards. Essentially, the 31-year-old is betting on himself and in the process New England is able to take a low-risk flier on an accomplished pass catcher who is bouncing back from the second Achilles injury of his career, which occurred last December. After suffering a torn right Achilles' tendon back in February 2011, Thomas went on to play 11 games during the 2011 campaign and then rounded into Pro Bowl-form in 2012. This time around, Thomas is recovering from a left Achilles' tear, an injury that has the potential to sap pro athletes of speed and explosiveness, especially in the back half of their careers.

  • Demaryius Thomas: Makes visit to New England
    By RotoWire Staff

Thomas (Achilles) visited with the Patriots on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports. Aside from Julian Edelman and James White, Tom Brady doesn't have many reliable pass catchers at his disposal in the wake of Rob Gronkowski's retirement and Josh Gordon's indefinite suspension. Only three and a half months removed from tearing his left Achilles tendon, Thomas almost certainly was unable to do much physical activity in front of the Patriots' training staff. More likely than not, the Patriots are keeping tabs on free agents like Thomas, who has a long rehab process to complete before he'll be able to aid any offense.

  • Demaryius Thomas: Suffers minor injuries in crash
    By RotoWire Staff

Thomas (Achilles) sustained minor injuries in a single-vehicle crash early Saturday morning, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Thomas was identified as the driver in the vehicle rollover, while one of the other two individuals in the car suffered possible serious injuries, though they don't appear life-threatening. The veteran wide receiver is currently a free agent after being released by the Texans on Thursday, and his status for the start of the 2019 season is in limbo after he ruptured his Achilles in December.

  • Demaryius Thomas: Cut loose by Houston
    By RotoWire Staff

The Texans will release Thomas (Achilles) on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Traded from Denver to Houston on Oct. 30, the 31-year-old wide receiver caught 23 of 33 targets for 275 yards and two touchdowns in seven games with the Texans before suffering a torn Achilles in Week 16. The timing of the injury could make it a challenge to be ready for Week 1 of 2019, but there hasn't been any indication of Thomas pondering retirement. He should draw some interest around the league as a potential second or third option at wide receiver once he's healthy. The Texans figure to move forward with DeAndre Hopkins (shoulder), Will Fuller (knee) and Keke Coutee as their three-wide alignment, hoping for better injury luck in 2019.

  • Texans' Demaryius Thomas: Wants to be a Texan
    By RotoWire Staff

Thomas (Achilles) said he'd like to finish his career in a Texans uniform, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports. Thomas caught 23 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns after he was acquired from the Broncos prior to the trade deadline, but suffered an Achilles injury that will sideline him at least six months. So, getting healthy is Thomas' immediate concern. The Texans were pleased with Thomas' contributions, but head coach Bill O'Brien acknowledged his status with the team is a fluid situation. Houston is expected to have a healthy Will Fuller (knee) and Keke Coutee back in 2019, and Achilles injuries are tough, particularly for players beyond age 30.
