Player Outlook

LeGarrette Blount signed a one-year deal with the Eagles in May, and he's expected to take over as the starter. While it's hard to imagine Blount matching his 2016 production with the Patriots of 1,161 rushing yards and a league-best 18 touchdowns, this was as good a landing spot as he could have hoped for after a long free agency wait. The Eagles, who will likely release Ryan Mathews, have a roster full of smaller, faster running backs in Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood and Donnel Pumphrey. What they were lacking is a battering ram to soften up the middle of defenses, and Blount fills that role perfectly. While there's still some uncertainty regarding the total number of touches Blount will receive, we view him as a No. 3 or No. 4 running back with No. 2 upside in standard leagues. He's worth a mid-round pick in all formats.

Player News
  • Blount's lack of usage in Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Chiefs was due to game flow, Andrew Kulp of CSN Philadelphia reports. Blount saw just six offensive snaps in the contest, far fewer than Darren Sproles (50) and even Wendell Smallwood (14). Head coach Doug Pederson claimed his team found it difficult to run the ball with seven or eight men frequently in the box and also in a lot of passing situations for which the other backs were more suited. The plan coming into the game was also a factor, as the Eagles wanted to attack the Chiefs' man coverage down the field. Nevertheless, Pederson reiterated his confidence in Blount and that the burly back still has a role with the team. Despite the vote of confidence, it'll be hard to trust the 31-year-old running back until Philadelphia commits to its running game more consistently.

  • Blount received no carries and caught his only target for no gain in Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Chiefs. Though he led the team in carries in Week 1, Blount took a back seat as Darren Sproles headed the rushing attack with Wendell Smallwood mixed in. It is unclear if Blount is injured or has been disciplined by the team for any reason, but until any possible details emerge, this performance should be attributed to the game plan for the week. As such, it's difficult to justify starting Blount in fantasy lineups until some sort of clarity regarding the backfield situation is achieved.

  • Blount carried 14 times for 46 yards in Sunday's 30-17 win over the Redskins. He also turned his only target into a one-yard receiving touchdown. Blount couldn't grind out much on the ground against an improved Washington front, but he salvaged his day from a fantasy perspective with a short touchdown grab in the second quarter. More encouraging for Blount was the fact that Wendell Smallwood and Darren Sproles combined for just six yards on six carries. The duo will handle the majority of the work in passing situations this season, but Blount remains the lead back heading into next Sunday's road matchup with the Chiefs.

  • Blount is listed atop the Eagles' first depth chart of the regular season. There were some murmurs that Blount's roster spot might be in danger due to his preseason struggles in combination with the emergence of undrafted rookie Corey Clement. The Eagles ended up keeping five running backs, with Blount followed on the depth chart by Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood, Donnel Pumphrey and Clement. Eagles coach Doug Pederson hinted at a committee when speaking to the media Monday, saying carries will be dictated by the game plan and situation, according to Zach Berman of The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News.

  • Eagles' LeGarrette Blount: Still not up to speed
    By RotoWire Staff

Blount has looked slow during practices and preseason games, Eliot Shorr-Parks of The Newark Star-Ledger reports. Blount was viewed as a somewhat questionable fit in Eagles coach Doug Pederson's system after signing a one-year deal this offseason, and the running back has done nothing to quiet those concerns this preseason while averaging 2.8 yards on 13 carries. His struggles have opened the door for Wendell Smallwood to challenge for a significant portion of the rushing workload, and there's even been some speculation that Blount's roster spot isn't safe. Pederson suggested otherwise last Tuesday, saying he still expects Blount to be a big part of the Philadelphia offense. It's possible Pederson could change his mind if undrafted 220-pound rookie Corey Clement continues to impress in Thursday's preseason finale against the Jets.
