  • Coach Kyle Shanahan suggested Goodwin won't necessarily be a starter in 2019, Joe Fann of the 49ers' official website reports. "You know, there hasn't been a consistency," Shanahan said Tuesday. "At times, [Goodwin and Kendrick Bourne] have played at a high level. They've been out there a lot as starting receivers, which I don't think always needs to be the case. I think we can get other guys in there to take the pressure off of them." Goodwin followed his 2017 breakout with a disappointing 2018, missing five full games and parts of others due to an assortment of lower-body injuries and an unfortunate family situation. It doesn't appear any of the injuries was serious enough to impact his offseason preparation, but he nonetheless faces the prospect of competition with the 49ers opting for quantity over quality at wide receiver. In addition to Goodwin and Bourne, the team will give Dante Pettis, Jordan Matthews, Trent Taylor and Richie James a fair opportunity to earn significant roles. Goodwin isn't in any danger of losing his spot on the roster, as his 2019 base salary ($2.95 million) became fully guaranteed Monday, per overthecap.com. He wouldn't have much fantasy value without a starting job, but the 28-year-old speed demon could still be plenty useful for the 49ers as a lower-volume deep threat off the bench.

  • 49ers' Marquise Goodwin: Won't play against Rams
    By RotoWire Staff

Goodwin (Achilles/calf) will not play in Sunday's game against the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Goodwin finished an injury-plagued season with 23 catches for 395 yards and four touchdowns on 43 targets in 11 games, barely making any noise outside of a 4-126-2 receiving line against the Packers in Week 6. He wasn't the best version of himself even when he managed to suit up, and it obviously didn't help that he caught passes from Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard instead of Jimmy Garoppolo (knee). The speedy 28-year-old should still have a place in the 49ers' long-term plan, with 2019 marking the first season of the three-year contract extension he signed in March. As for the immediate future, San Francisco is left with four healthy wide receivers for Week 17: Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor, Richie James and Steven Dunbar.

  • 49ers' Marquise Goodwin: Held out again Thursday
    By RotoWire Staff

Goodwin (Achilles/calf) was listed as a non-participant on Thursday's practice report, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Two of the three DNPs on Thursday have already been ruled out for Sunday's season finale against the Rams -- Matt Breida (ankle) and Dante Pettis (knee) -- and Goodwin may join them with another absence Friday. If that comes to pass, the 49ers' receiving corps will be left in the hands of Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor, Richie James and Steven Dunbar.

  • 49ers' Marquise Goodwin: No practice Wednesday
    By RotoWire Staff

Goodwin (calf/Achilles) will be held out of practice Wednesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Prior to both of the 49ers' past two games, Goodwin tended to a calf injury but suited up anyway, combining for four receptions (on nine targets) for 36 yards. During the most recent outing, he suffered what was termed an Achilles issue, but coach Kyle Shanahan later labeled the setback as a bruised calf, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. Whatever the nature of the concern, Shanahan said Goodwin's practice reps will be kept in check this week.

  • 49ers' Marquise Goodwin: Dealing with minor injury
    By RotoWire Staff

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Goodwin has a bruised calf and will be monitored throughout the week, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. This development is great news for Goodwin, who was originally speculated to have suffered an Achilles injury during Sunday's loss to Chicago. However, it still isn't certain if the receiver will be available to play in the season finale this Sunday against the Rams. Look for Wednesday's injury report to be the next step towards clarifying matters.
