The Bills signed Banyard on Friday, ESPN's Mike Rodak reports. Banyard is jack of all trades who can provide depth in the running, passing and return games. He even has the ability to serve as an emergency quarterback. However, the Bills are just filling out their offseason roster, so it's no certainty the 28-year-old even makes the team next season.
Banyard was signed from the practice squad to the active roster Tuesday. Banyard has spent the entire season on the Jaguars practice squad and will finally have a chance to make his debut for the team. He's buried on the depth chart at running back but could contribute on special teams in Sunday's game against the Colts.
Banyard was released by Jacksonville on Sunday, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post report Banyard has never made an Week 1 53-man roster through three years in the NFL, but has been called up several times after a team suffered injuries to their running back. Should injuries strike the Jaguars' backfield they may bring Banyard back.
Banyard has been promoted from the practice squad. With Corey Grant (hip) landing on the IR and T.J. Yeldon (groin) still very much a question mark for Sunday's game against the Bills, Banyard was promoted to provide some depth at the running back position. Considering Toby Gerhart and Denard Robinson will likely get most of looks out of the backfield, Banyard shouldn't be viewed as a viable fantasy option at this time. However, that could easily change if Robinson or Gerhart suffers an injury of their own.
Vikings running back Joe Banyard received some work Week 12 against the Packers. Banyard carried the ball five times for 26 yards. He also played a role in the passing game, hauling in all three targets for 19 yards. Banyard will look for more Week 13 against the Panthers.
