Danny Etling will compete for a roster spot to be the No. 3 quarterback for the Patriots this season behind Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer, but he will likely fall behind rookie Jarrett Stidham as well. Even if Etling makes the final roster, he has minimal Fantasy value in most leagues. Ignore him in all formats on Draft Day.
Etling signed a futures contract with the Patriots on Tuesday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports. Etling spent all of 2018 on the Patriots' practice squad and will look to compete for the backup quarterback slot next season.
Etling signed a contract to join the Patriots' practice squad, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports. New England placed Etling on waivers Sunday, but the quarterback now comes back to the team after going unclaimed. In four preseason appearances, the former LSU quarterback completed 18 of 32 passes for 157 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions.
Etling was waived by the Patriots on Saturday, Mark Daniels of The Providence Journal reports. The rookie seventh-round pick apparently didn't quite do enough to convince the Patriots they should keep three quarterbacks. Etling did have an 86-yard rushing touchdown in the exhibition finale thanks to a defensive breakdown, but he finished the preseason with a 52.6 completion percentage and just 4.7 yards per pass attempt. The Patriots likely will add him to the practice squad if he passes through waivers unclaimed.
Etling is expected to play most of Thursday's preseason finale, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports. The rookie from LSU is considered a long shot to make the 53-man roster. The Patriots' decision to select Etling in the seventh round of April's draft came as a surprise to many, given the team's other needs and Etling's inconsistencies throughout his college career. However, if Etling can generate a productive effort Thursday, there's a chance he can persuade New England's brass that he's worthy of active roster consideration. Naturally, it's a tall task to read the mind of Bill Belichick.
Etling saw seven snaps in Thursday's preseason win over the Eagles, logging one incompletion and a sack in the process. Etling's play has yet to generate much buzz this summer and it's possible that the 2018 seventh-rounder ends up on the Patriots' practice squad, in the event that the team elects to roster just two QBs. Of course, if Etling ends up being cut, he could be scooped up on waivers. Either way, the 24-year-old is viewed as a developmental QB, and it would take a series of injuries to players above him on the depth chart for him to draw a regular-season NFL start this year.
