The Bears signed Gentry to a reserve/future contract Tuesday. Gentry appeared in four games with the Bears in 2017, hauling in three of six targets for 35 yards. However, despite leading the team in receptions during the 2018 preseason, he failed to make the 53-man roster. He'll have another opportunity to do so after signing a reserve/future contract.
Gentry was waived by the Bears on Saturday, Adam Jahns of the Chicago Sun Times reports. Gentry led the Bears in receptions throughout the preseason, but still wasn't able to secure a spot on the team's 53-man roster. He'll be placed on waivers before potentially returning as a practice squad candidate.
Gentry caught six passes for 54 yards Thursday against the Bengals. Gentry led the Bears with 11 targets, but he primarily played with the third-string offense in the second half. Although he's been solid in camp for the second consecutive year, he's battling for a roster spot, and there's a strong possibility he finds his way onto the practice squad as he did for most of the 2017 season.
Gentry caught three passes for 19 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's 17-16 loss to the Ravens. Gentry caught a 10-yard TD strike from third-string quarterback Tyler Bray on the last drive of the game to pull the Bears a within one point. During the contest, his production came against the deep reserves in the second half of a game in which Chicago started their primary backup receivers. Although he had a phenomenal training camp in 2017, he spent most of the season on the practice squad before hauling in three passes for 35 yards in four games while on the 53-man roster. With Chicago having overhauled their wide receiver corps in the offseason, Gentry will battle in the hopes of landing one of the last spots on the Week 1 roster, although he faces long odds.
The Bears signed Gentry to a reserve/future contract Monday. Gentry moved from the Bears' practice squad to the active roster multiple times this season, ultimately finishing the year on the former. The Wyoming product is a nifty route-runner who should have a real shot to claim a spot on the Bears' unsettled depth chart with a strong offseason.
