The Jets claimed Cole off waivers from the 49ers on Wednesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports. Cole stuck to special teams in his lone appearance with the 49ers last season as a rookie. He'll spend the offseason competing for a practice-squad spot in New York.
Cole was waived by the 49ers on Tuesday, per the team's official site. Cole suited up in one game for the 49ers last season, but only played a special teams role. He'll now look to sign on with a new team ahead of training camp.
Cole (coach's decision) is inactive for Saturday's game against the Cardinals. San Francisco has plenty of depth at the wide receiver position for Week 16, with Richie James, River Cracraft and Jordan Matthews all available as depth options behind Brandon Aiyuk and Kendrick Bourne. The 24-year-old Cole just signed with the 49ers on Christmas Eve, so it's less than surprising he wasn't able to crack the lineup within such a short span.
Cole was signed to a two-year contract by the 49ers on Thursday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Cole, who attended Division II McKendree University in Illinois, has been with the Dolphins' practice squad throughout his rookie campaign. He has yet to make an NFL appearance, but that could change soon given the two-year contract and the 49ers' depleted receiver corps. Cole could also contribute on special teams, as he returned both kickoffs and punts as a collegiate player.
Cole was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list Thursday and restored to the Dolphins' practice squad. Cole's stint on the inactive list reaches an end after 14 days, meaning the undrafted rookie can return to team activities. The 24-year-old receiver has yet to make an appearance in the NFL, after playing his college football for Division II McKendree University in Illinois.
