  • James Jones: Announces retirement
    By RotoWire Staff

Jones announced his retirement Wednesday. Jones was released by the Chargers last August and never caught on with another team. He spent eight of his nine seasons in Green Bay, including a 2012 campaign in which he recorded 14 touchdowns on only 64 receptions. He never reached 900 receiving yards in a season, but his rapport with Aaron Rodgers in the red zone allowed him to score 51 times on 433 career catches (11.8 percent).

  • James Jones: Suggests he wants to play for Niners
    By RotoWire Staff

Jones said he wants to play in the Bay Area, SiriusXM NFL Radio reports. Released by San Diego on Monday, the 32-year-old Jones seems to know that the 49ers arguably have the weakest group of wide receivers in the NFL. He's from San Jose and went to college at San Jose State, making it a strong fit from a personal perspective. While borderline roster material for most teams, Jones could potentially serve as the No. 2 wideout if he were to sign with San Francisco. It's unclear if the Niners have any interest, as head coach Chip Kelly may prefer to evaluate younger players while rebuilding the team.

  • James Jones: Released by Chargers Monday
    By RotoWire Staff

Jones was released by the Chargers on Monday, Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union Tribune reports. The veteran receiver projected as the sixth wideout on the Chargers' depth chart, so he was in competition for a spot on the final roster. Jones is entering his 10th season in the league after spending all but one prior with the Packers. Isaiah Burse, DeAndre Reaves, and Dom Williams now figure to be competing for a spot on the final roster.

  • Chargers' James Jones: Plays into fourth quarter
    By RotoWire Staff

Jones caught two passes for 21 yards on three targets in Sunday's preseason game against the Vikings. Jones played into the fourth quarter, long after Dontrelle Inman and Tyrell Williams had already been removed from the game. The Chargers wanted to add a veteran after Steve Johnson (knee) suffered a season-ending injury, but there's been nothing to suggest Jones will have a significant role in the offense. He'll likely be fighting for his roster spot in the final preseason game.

  • Chargers' James Jones: Solid in preseason win
    By RotoWire Staff

Jones recorded two catches for 21 yards in the Chargers preseason win over the Cardinals. The Chargers reacted quickly to the season-ending injury Stevie Johnson (knee) suffered during the first week of training camp, signing Jones to provide depth at the wide receiver position. While the 32-year-old likely won't earn a starting role now that both Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin appear healthy heading into the season, Jones has developed a bit of chemistry with starting QB Philip Rivers --- enough to warrant a roster spot with the team. The veteran probably won't see the field enough to put up consistent fantasy numbers as it stands now, but he could be a solid fantasy candidate if injuries affect the top of the depth chart.
