The Browns placed Thompson-Robinson (hip) on injured reserve Tuesday.
Since clearing the concussion protocol, the fifth-round pick out of UCLA has appeared in each of the team's last three games, taking a handful of snaps behind Joe Flacco in specific packages. Thompson-Robinson apparently injured his hip during his brief cameo in Sunday's 36-22 win over the Texans, and the team decided it could put his roster spot to better use for the rest of the regular season. He's technically eligible to be activated as soon as the AFC Championship Game, should the Browns advance that far, but for now PJ Walker will step in as Flacco's backup. Thompson-Robinson wraps up his regular season with a 53.6 percent completion rate on 112 passes for 3.9 yards per attempt, one touchdown and four interceptions to go with 14 carries for 65 yards over his eight outings.
Thompson-Robinson completed his only passing attempt for five yards in Sunday's 20-17 win over Chicago.
Thompson-Robinson entered the game for one play and completed a pass to Jerome Ford in the red zone before starter Joe Flacco re-entered the game. While Thompson-Robinson was in concussion protocol throughout Week 13, Flacco was elevated from the practice squad and started in the Browns' 36-19 loss to the Rams last Sunday, throwing for 254 yards, two touchdowns and an interception on 44 attempts. Flacco took most of the first-team reps in practice this week, but Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski declined to name a Week 14 starting quarterback after Thompson-Robinson cleared the protocol Friday while practicing fully that same day. A five-year starter at UCLA, Thompson-Robinson had plenty of experience running an NFL-style offense with Chip Kelly at the helm. The 23-year-old set career highs in passing touchdowns (27), rushing touchdowns (12) and rushing yards (646) in his final season at UCLA, but the growth as a playmaker was offset by a rise in turnovers. Thompson-Robinson makes for an intriguing backup behind Deshaun Watson, though he'll have to battle Joshua Dobbs and Kellen Mond for slotting on the depth chart.
