Weddle reverted to the Rams practice squad Tuesday. Weddle was elevated from the practice squad for Monday's wild-card victory over the Cardinals, playing 19 snaps at free safety while splitting time with Terrell Burgess. • Eric Weddle: Signs with Rams' practice squad

The Rams signed Weddle to their practice squad Wednesday. Weddle hasn't made an appearance in the NFL since 2019, but he'll come out of retirement ahead of the playoffs after Jordan Fuller (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday. While he'll begin on the team's practice squad, it wouldn't be surprising to see him join the active roster ahead of Monday's wild-card matchup against the Cardinals. Both Weddle and Nick Scott could see snaps in Fuller's absence.

  • Eric Weddle: Still fielding offers from teams

Weddle, who retired from the NFL in February, has reportedly received contract offers from teams and would be willing to entertain a comeback in the right scenario, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. While Earl Thomas remains the top safety on the open market, the 35-year-old Weddle may prove to be a more palatable and cost-effective veteran alternative for contending clubs looking for help on the back end of the defense. A six-time Pro Bowler, Weddle was a 16-game starter for the Rams in 2019, finishing with 108 tackles and four passes defensed.

Weddle recorded 10 tackles (four solo) during Sunday's 20-7 loss to San Francisco. The veteran has now piled up 51 tackles (28 solo) through six contests, which makes him one of the more reliable defensive backs in IDP settings. With the Los Angeles offense in a bit of a funk, Weddle's fantasy value could also be trending up.

  • Rams' Eric Weddle: Mixed signals on health

Coach Sean McVay said Weddle is in concussion protocol, but Weddle tweeted that he's "good as gold," Cameron DaSilva of USA Today reports. McVay's word trumps Weddle's self-diagnosis, but this may be encouraging news for a quick recovery. Keep an eye on Weddle's practice status Wednesday as the team gets ready for Week 2's contest versus the Saints. If Weddle misses additional time, expect Marqui Christian to jump into a starting free safety role.

The Ravens released Weddle on Tuesday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. • Ravens' Eric Weddle: Hoping to be in Ravens' plans

Weddle has stated a desire to return to the Ravens in 2019. Weddle totaled the third-fewest tackles of his career in 2018 (68) and failed to come up with an interception for just the second time in 12 seasons. While he explained he still has a desire to play, it's not certain that Baltimore will want to keep him around, given his $8.25 million cap hit in 2019. If the Ravens ultimately decide to part ways, it seems Weddle is prepared to announce his retirement.

Weddle presumably came out of Sunday's loss to the Vikings with an ankle injury, which ultimately drew him a questionable designation on the short week. However, the issue was never considered serious, and he should take on his usual role on the defense barring any setbacks.

Weddle wasn't able to play in the Chargers' previous two games, but he was able to practice Wednesday. Gehlken cautions that Weddle's availability in practice Wednesday shouldn't indicate his availability one way or another against the Bears, however it's clear the 30-year-old safety doesn't intend to rest easy this week with the Chargers slated for a bye following Monday's game. Weddle's official status will likely arrive sometime during the weekend, but his availability in practice Saturday will likely go a long way in determining his status against Chicago.
