Head coach Peter Laviolette said after practice Sunday that Ovechkin (lower body) could play Wednesday's season-opener against the visiting Rangers, but that he's not sure at this point, Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic reports.

Ovechkin didn't partake in Sunday's session, but he was spotted watching practice from the bench area and walking without any noticeable limp. Laviolette also relayed that he doesn't think "it's a long-term thing" with the Russian star, so fantasy managers may want to circle Saturday's home contest against visiting Tampa as a more conservative target for Ovie's return. Nonetheless, an update will be provided prior to Wednesday's game against New York.
