Head coach Todd Reirden indicated the starting job will be Holtby's "to lose" when the Capitals begin the playoffs, JJ Regan of NBC Sports Washington reports.

Reirden's confidence in Holtby likely has more to do with the netminder's postseason resume rather than his unimpressive 3.11 GAA and .897 save percentage accrued behind a 25-14-6 record during 2019-20. The 30-year-old is in the final season of a five-year, $30.5 million contract and with Ilya Samsonov waiting in the wings, a strong postseason performance is integral to the former Vezina Trophy-winner's hunt for a new contract.
