Oshie, a pending unrestricted free agent, was not protected by the Capitals ahead of the expansion draft, The Washington Post reports.

The Vegas team is currently operating within a 72-hour window to freely negotiate a contract with unrestricted free agent Oshie or any other pending free agent, including those that are restricted. After Vegas' picks for the expansion draft are made Wednesday, the Capitals would have the right to resume contract talks with Oshie if still available. The slick sniper made $20.875 million over the life of a five-year deal with Washington. He's brought fantasy owners at least 50 points in each of the past four seasons, and netted a career-high 33 goals in 2016-17. It's unlikely that Oshie's thinking seriously about Sin City since he'd be moving from a top contender to a brand new franchise that should take some time to become relevant on the ice.
