Ducks' Sami Vatanen: Remains in Anaheim

Vatanen (shoulder) was not traded ahead of the 30-team roster freeze Saturday, the Orange County Register reports.

The mobile power-play defenseman was expected to be dealt before NHL teams submitted their list of protected players for the expansion draft. However, a deal involving Vatanen could still be happening behind the scenes. Unless there is a leak, though, no one in the media will know about such a deal until Thursday, when the roster freeze ends. Vatanen has three years remaining on a contract that comes with a $4.875 million cap hit, but the emergence of Brandon Montour would soften the blow if he leaves. Fellow defenseman Kevin Bieksa has a no-move clause in his deal, which makes it tougher for Vatanen to stay in Anaheim. The 26-year-old is recovering from shoulder surgery and that's undoubtedly a consideration for Vegas or any other team that may be courting him.
