Bernier was sent to the Hurricanes from the Red Wings along with a 2021 third-round pick Thursday in a swap for Alex Nedeljkovic, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
Bernier is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 28, so all the Canes have done is buy themselves a few days of exclusive negotiating rights. If the veteran netminder does decide to sign with Carolina, it figures to be as the No. 2 option behind Petr Mrazek, though he is also poised to hit free agency as well.
