Varlamov (undisclosed) skated with the Islanders prior to their 6-3 loss to the Hurricanes on Thursday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports.

The Islanders and coach Barry Trotz have been very secretive about the exact nature of the injury to Varlamov. While skating would certainly seem to be a step in the right direction, Varlamov will need to participate in a full practice and take shots before playing between the pipes in an actual game. That would make playing Saturday versus the Panthers unlikely. Next Tuesday in Chicago might be a more realistic target for Varlamov to be activated off injured reserve.
