Rooney (upper body) has been skating on his own and is targeting an early April return to game action, per coach Gerard Gallant, Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today reports.
The same is true of fellow injured Rangers forward Kappo Kakko (wrist). New York beefed up its forward depth at the trade deadline, but there should still be a lineup spot for Rooney in the bottom six upon his return, as he's one of the team's top penalty killers and chipped in 11 points in 51 games prior to getting injured.
