Athanasiou met with Red Wings GM Ken Holland in person Saturday to continue contract negotiations, but an extension still has not been announced, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Double A's contract saga has been drawn out much longer than perhaps anyone thought it would. In fact, The Detroit News reported in late July that the crafty, up-and-coming winger would agree to terms with Detroit's club well ahead of training camp. However, Athanasiou's agent, Darren Ferris, has attempted to use a reported KHL offer of one-year, $3 million from AK Bars Kazan as leverage in the contract negotiations, and heading to Russia would also seem to open the door for his client to play in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. It will be interesting to see what ultimately happens here, especially knowing that Athanasiou has already been offered one- and two-year deals to stay in Motown.
