Nylander (lower body) did not skate Friday after Sabres GM Jason Botterill had expressed optimism that the prospect would be ready for training camp, John Vogl of The Buffalo News reports.

The Sabres have more training camp sessions scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, but at this point, it's unclear if Nylander will be available for those key dates. It's obvious from the Sabres making him 2016's eighth overall draft choice that he's a prized skater, but missing even a single day of training camp is good for no one. He drew into four contests with the Swords last season, but a minus-24 rating and rather scant output of 28 points in 65 games with AHL Rochester that same year suggest he needs to polish his game before taking the grand leap to the NHL.
