Malone, who sat out the Prospects Challenge with a hip injury, missed the first day of training camp Friday as well, The Buffalo News reports.

The good news is that the injury isn't believed to be serious, but the bad news is that Malone's already fallen behind the competition. He appeared in one game with the Sabres last year after finishing up his NCAA career, and although he isn't expected to make the team this year, he will lose some valuable time to develop. It's likely Malone will begin the season with AHL Rochester in a top-nine role. There is no timetable for Malone's return, and he's considered week-to-week until further notice.
