Maroon (illness) was on the ice for Saturday's practice, Bryan Burns of the Lightning's official site reports. Marron missed the first two days of training camp with a non-COVID illness, but he's feeling better and ready to rejoin his teammates as Tampa Bay begins its quest for a three-peat. Fellow veteran tough guy Zach Bogosian (illness) also made his return Saturday.
Maroon scored a goal in Wednesday's 4-0 win over the Panthers in Game 6. Tyler Johnson rushed up the ice to negate a potential icing call, then centered the puck for Maroon, who tallied the opening goal at 6:16 of the first period. The 33-year-old Maroon had gone without a point in the first five games of the season, but he racked up 26 PIM and 11 hits in that span. The two-time Stanley Cup champion should continue to see fourth-line minutes as a physical presence in the Lightning lineup. He had 18 points, 75 hits and 60 PIM in 55 regular-season outings.
Maroon has served his one-game suspension and will be eligible to play in Game 1 of Tampa Bay's first-round playoff matchup with the Panthers. The schedule for the Lightning's first-round series has yet to be released, but Maroon will be eligible to rejoin Tampa Bay's lineup whenever Game 1 takes place. The gritty winger picked up 18 points and 60 PIM in 55 regular-season contests this year.
Maroon has been suspended one game for his unsportsmanlike conduct in Saturday's loss to Florida. Maroon will miss Monday's season finale against the Panthers but will be eligible to return in the first round of the postseason, also against Florida. The veteran power forward finishes the regular season with four goals and 14 assists in 55 games.
Maroon will have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety for roughing Florida's Brandon Montour on Saturday. If Maroon's handed a suspension, that would mark the end of his regular season, as the Lightning will play their season finale Monday against the Panthers. The bad blood between Maroon and the Panthers is just getting started, as the two Florida-based teams are set to face off in the first round of the playoffs after finishing off the regular season with a pair of meetings.
