  • Byron (hip) is expected to rejoin the team on the road this week. Byron was nearing a return from a hip injury before he was added to the COVID-19 protocols list in late December. "He was getting really close to coming back, but then he got COVID, so [his rehab] had to be stopped. That conditioning, that preparation with his injury, just to make sure he's well built up to come back, that took a setback," head coach Dominique Ducharme explained. He's since been cleared of the protocols and is set to rejoin the team this week. The coach added that Byron will "be back pretty soon." It seems likely that if the organization wants him to join the team on the road, then Byron would appear in a game this week. Montreal plays in Arizona on Monday then Dallas on Tuesday. Beyond the back-to-back set, the Canadiens have games in Las Vegas on Thursday and Colorado on Saturday.

  • Byron (hip, COVID-19 protocols) was cleared to play Saturday, Eric Engels of Sportsnet.ca reports. Byron skated during Saturday morning practice for the first time since undergoing hip surgery in July. The 32-year-old has been sidelined for the entirety of 2021-22 but could make his first appearance as soon as Monday's contest against Arizona.

  • Byron (hip) entered the NHL's COVID-19 protocols Wednesday. Byron has yet to play this season after undergoing hip surgery in late July, so this development likely won't impact his near-term availability. If and when he's cleared to play, Byron should slot into a bottom-six role for the Canadiens.

  • Byron (hip) was placed on long-term injured reserve on Thursday, per CapFriendly. Byron is expected to be out until the end of December as he recovers from hip surgery, so this is simply a procedural move to earn the Canadiens more cap space. The 32-year-old will likely return to a bottom-six role once he's healthy again.

  • Byron (hip) skated with a member of the Canadiens' training staff Monday, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports. Byron was on ice for a 15-minute stretch, his first such activity since undergoing hip surgery in July. He'll be on the injured list for the first few months of the season and could return by the end of 2021. Byron is a speedy forward that is part of the penalty-kill unit and a member of the team's leadership group.
