A prototypical bottom-six player for more than a decade, Jason Chimera looks like he's still capable of offering up 30-plus points from the third line even as he enters his age-38 campaign. His combination of physicality and complementary scoring ability has led to reliably high hit totals and two straight 20-goal seasons in his late 30s, and there's no sign that his role is set to change. Most fantasy leagues won't have much use for a player who's never come close to sniffing 50 points in his career, but those in deep formats where Chimera's hits count will appreciate his contributions.
Chimera is not protected by the Islanders ahead of the upcoming expansion draft. The Islanders chose to protect four defensemen, which led to an overwhelming number of forwards being exposed. Chimera is coming off a solid campaign, having scored 20 goals and eclipsed the 30-point mark for the second straight season. However, he turned 38 in May, and Vegas is likely to choose a younger presence to build its organization around.
Chimera scored a goal in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Senators. Chimera reached the 20-goal mark for the third time in his career. The veteran is a bit of a late bloomer, posting 73 points over his past two seasons. Over his first eight NHL campaigns he totaled 83 goals, but over his past six seasons he has amassed 85.
Chimera found twine in Sunday's 5-2 road loss to the Flames. The brawny veteran is off to a hot start in March with points in three consecutive games. Only once this season has Chimera managed two points in a single contest, but that would probably be asking too much from a third-liner who has been clocking fewer than 13 minutes on average. Chimera is a serviceable fantasy commodity in deep leagues, or even a chancy bargain play in daily settings.
Chimera scored a goal on two shots over 13:44 of ice time in Thursday's 3-1 win over Philadelphia. He's now hit 20 points for the season, and if that doesn't sound like much, well, it isn't -- Chimera is on pace to fall well short of last year's 40-point output. At 37 years old, the ex-Capital plays just a bit part for the Islanders.
Chimera scored a goal and added an assist during Monday's win over Boston. The veteran winger has now marked the goal column in three consecutive outings, but with just eight goals and 16 points over 42 games, Chimera still doesn't boast much fantasy upside. Additionally, he entered Monday's game averaging just 12:45 of ice time per night. Without a more significant role, it'll be tough for him to provide more offensive production and gain fantasy relevance.
