  • Blues' Chris Butler: Placed on waivers
    By RotoWire Staff

Butler (face) was waived Wednesday. A career journeyman, Butler was able to crack the St. Louis lineup for one game last season; he spent the rest of the campaign with AHL Chicago. A stay-at-home defender, Butler won't contribute much at the offensive end, but he could be a useful depth option for the organization, should he clear waivers and be sent to the minors.

  • Butler left Saturday's preseason game against the Stars in the third period after taking a puck to the face, Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The Blues' coaching staff didn't have an update on Butler's status following Saturday's contest, so it's unclear how long he'll be sidelined for. Either way, the 30-year-old blueliner wasn't going to be in consideration for a spot on St. Louis' Opening Night roster, so fantasy owners don't need to concern themselves with his status.

  • Butler signed a two-year, two-way contract with St. Louis on Wednesday. Butler has played in just six NHL games over the past two seasons, failing to record a point over that stretch. Once an 82-game player with Calgary, the 30-year-old has been unable to secure a regular spot in the game-day lineup since joining the Blues' organization. Considering the blueliner's new deal is of the two-way variety, fantasy owners probably shouldn't expect a lot of production out of him going forward.

    By RotoWire Staff

Butler was sent down to AHL Chicago on Monday. The defenseman was called up under emergency conditions Sunday to replace the injured Robert Bortuzzo (upper body). With some time to get healthy before Wednesday's playoff opener, the Blues didn't need Butler for the time being and shipped him back to the minors.

  • Blues' Chris Butler: Ascends to big club Sunday
    By RotoWire Staff

Butler was called up from AHL Chicago under emergency conditions Sunday, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The Notes have several injured forwards but Robert Bortuzzo (upper body) is the only ailing defenseman. Nonetheless, Butler will step in for the regular-season finale against the Avalanche. He's the type that seems to be too good for the AHL -- fashioning five goals and 20 assists with the Wolves this season -- but rarely counted on for a substantial role at hockey's highest level.
